Default Oops...

This is what happens when you're flying inverted about 10 feet off the ground and pull up.

Ouch..... That looks like it really hit hard!

Did your engine and radio gear survive?

Been there, done that. A 40 sized Sport Air. Now all the electronics and engine are in a coroplast plane. It might still re-kit if I do it again, but the rebuild would only take a few hours, LOL. I hope it's one of those 'lessons' that you only have to have once. I'm trying to get used to 'pull to the canope, push to the gear' instead of 'up and down'.

Yes, if all modellers were honest, this thread would go on forever. It is not called the "Inverted Up Elevator Club" for nothing. It is probably the biggest model club in the world!

Pick yourself up, dust yourself off and go even lower inverted! Just remember - Push to go up!

It was a Four Star 40. My first kit build. It hit hard enough that the spinner left a dent in the asphault.

I'm finishing up my second now.. And suddenly I'm a bit more motivated to get it done. It's a Somethin' Extra.

Anyway, the crash tore both mount tabs off the engine, one of them taking a big chunk of the engine with it. My fuel tank ended up being about 1/2 it's original size too... Somehow the servos and radio gear survived. (I haven't range checked it yet, but no stripped servo gear teeth).

And yes, it is a great site... For a 20-something person club we're very lucky to have what we've got.

Now go and do it again, but with a Patriot doing about 120mph down the runway, Talk about a crowd pleaser, and you wont have much to carry since everything will sweep into a dustpan and be small enough to fit into a sandwich bag. Engine and all.

Nice field. No trees and lots of open spaces.

Nice Pile!!

Sorry for the loss dude - but I LMAO at the picture!

I had a similar brainfart once, lost a GP Venus out in the desert not paying attention. Thought it was upright got low and pulled up..... it wasn't.. BOOM.

The worst runway incident I had ? I did what I thought was a very thorough ground and maiden pre-flight inspection on a newly constructed GP Patriot. I took off with the flawlessly covered plane with $400 worth of brand new Sport JETT 51 and carbon fiber pipe on board and I piled it at 120 MPH into the asphalt. Not a thing left - servos, retracts, receiver and engine... all trash... that hurt!

After combing through the wreckage I noticed the only thing not destroyed was the aileron servo and horn. It was easy to conclude that I left out the screw in the aileron servo arm as the aileron linkage was a pretzeled mess. I got to about 100 feet straight up and the servo horn popped off - without yaw control - (the model was built solely for speed so it had NO rudder) ... it banked right in at full throttlel. (100 feet at 120 is about a half a second !) No chance to react but man was the sound spectacular.. I mean it was an explosion like an M-80. It looked like someone dumped a bale of hay on the runway the parts we so scattered. I am sure there is still a hole in the runway somewhere!! I never found the prop nut or the front retract - its probably buried in the asphalt!

Needless to say I NEVER left a screw out of anything again.

I put a 4*60 in just like that. I was doing aeleron rolls and got just to close to the ground and stopped inverted. My thumb did the right thing by pushing forward, but my brain took over and pulled back. Sometimes your brain isn't as good as the automatic response. Other times you need to listen. Knowing which is correct is the hard part.

Well duh..I just re-read my post, and it was an Ultra Stick 60, not the 4*...it's still hanging on the rack in the garage.

"Inverted Up Elevator Club"
I am also a member.

Back in 1979. It was an old kit named "Low Boy". Very much like an Astro Hog but a smaller wing span like about 55". I had a K&B 40 in it.

Sorry about the plane []

Man great field. Sorry about your plane.
I put some in but not when inverted low over the runway. I just keep saying to myself push forward .push forward, push forward. Works for me.

I did touch the rudder and ran it the lenght of the runway once, not good because when you go to fly out you can't. Push forward wing goes down on the runway. Ouch.

we've got something like 30, but there is never a time when all of us are there, and we have no runway, just an area of thick grass for deadstick landings, medium grass for flying over, and short grass for takeing off

Watched the same exact thing happen a few years ago, the plane impacted the asphalt so hard that the head of the engine literally exploded. He was only able to save a couple servo's, the rest of it ended up in the garbage can.

Hi There,

Looks like the club is gathering more members.
Paid my dues a few years ago, flying around the fiels inverted, decided to get up, was speaking with a spectator at the same time( I know, my own mistake), while all around it was "soft dirt", it went straight in from 15 feet, full bore in a small patch of concrete! FS 91 OS exploded on impact, never found the remains of aluminum spinner...not to many spinters, the Goldberg Chipmunk was covered with super Coverite, so I just had to carry two or three bags of balsa and ply chips...Boy that Coverite is strong! No excuses, my own doing!
