They could have strapped a seat to the top of that monster and offered rides!
I wonder, did they have to contact a tower for takeoff/landing clearance!

That will take gallons of CA to fix. I feel sorry for those guys... it's worse than having your wife leave you for your flying buddy. That plane was so big that NTSB or any of those scientific research bodies should have strapped crash dummies inside. The crash would have been useful.

well, if you take a look at the video, it looks like it was a victim of the p factor. let's see. long wingspan, turning into the wing, not a lot of control surface, hmmmm. if you look closely the upper wing is bending up too so i think it was just a matter of lift inequality due to the turn, and the model rolled over and was toast.

What an incredible aircraft, Sounds soooooo Cool. I grew up in the flight path of a sac base, March Air Force Base in California in the 70's. Those B-52's were LOUD Planes. I am glad to see such a successful reproduction, and what a fine one at that. What a shame for it to go down into flames. I am excited to hear that it will live again!![&:]

I think you need your eyesight checking!!! I am part of the crew that flew the Buff and on ALL of the flights at the NATS as well as all other flights, NOT ONE was over the trade stands or anywhere near them. Gordon Nicholls is one of the finest pilots in this country and has NEVER risked the public in a way you are suggesting. He has even reprimanded severely, senior pilots who have endangered the public with their silly manouvers. I really think that inexperienced and untested "pilots" like yourself, who spread malicous rumours like this, should keep their stupid mouths shut until they know better!!! It is your kind of tell-tale gossip that taints the hobby we have and puts it in a bad light. So lay off!!

Hi Again Tarquill,
If you can let everyone know the direction it dived/spun/turned prior to the crash then it will stop all this Left/Right bickering once and for all. I assume the the TV footage of the crash shows this rather that the low-res rubish we have all seen.

i have the video on my computer. it went in just the same way that this one did. steep turn, upper wing pulled further up, rolled it over and the pilot's only choice was to pull a hard up. however, the ground was jsut a little too high.

I feel bad for the person or persons that fly the model but I'm curious, Does anyone know the cost of this unit. I hate to see anyone lose a model, especially a masterpiece like that was.

No B-52 has crashed a couple of years ago...........Its been over 10 yrs since the last crash, and there isn't video of that one.
And spoilerons are suffeicient enough to turn this plane. It isn't designed to go more than 50 degrees in a bank. If you do you lose lots of airspeed and altitude quickly. The crash (which was at Fairchild) was done low altitude at almost 90 degrees of bank. The plane simply lost too much altitude and crashed. The roll rate on this plane is SLOOOOOW!..............Our biggest comment in this plane is whats the difference between a normal turn and a hard break turn in this plane...........It's the pilot screaming "OH SH**" cuz the plane turns the same!
In this R/C video it looks more like they lost all the airspeed and simply stalled it. Maybe an engine failure on one side......and they didn't recoginze it and banked into the bad engines. Or a big crosswind rocked it over and they didn't react fast enough. Tough to tell because the camera man lost the plane until it was already spinning into the ground.

To be honest with you, I think this was just a simple case of pilot error.
It was hard for me to tell which way it was banking, right or left. In either case, Im almost positive that the perception of the pilot was opposite of the planes true flight and it resulted in compensation which unfortunatly was the wrong direction. Then lack of altitude and elevator control surface size and throw prevented it from getting back to level flight. Im willing to bet even if it did have enough elevator to pull out of that high speed dive, it probably would have folded the wings and went in anyhow.
This being said, I applaud the pilot on a job well done. Both in actually having the guts to try to fly that monster successfully on prior flights, and in making one of the most spectacular R/C crashes in history.

Not sure if this was a B-52, but there is some video of a pretty large plane crashing into one of the Great Lakes (I'm gonna guess around chicago) during an airshow. Anybody remember that?

How can a Jet be the victim of P factor? By definition, P Factor, is caused by the rotating Prop wash, as in propeller.

I'm fairly certain that was the crash that sweetpea01 was referring to, it's the one that came immediately to mind when I read his post. The pilot was known for hot dogging and was trying to impress some VIP (I think it was a General) onboard during that flight at an airshow. What got him was too large of a bank with not enough of airspeed and definately not enough altitude. It's too bad he killed everyone onboard trying to be a show off. Thanks for the video.
Chris.
