RE: Magnum gone in at 180mph... very nice...
Don't know yet... haven't looked into it yet... it's going to be hard to determine the exact cause anyway, since everything is destroyed (linkages and stuff)...
I was diving toward the field, and it rolled over onto its back... I corrected and it rolled back right side up and wings level... by that time I was out of altitude...
It hit WOT at a 45 degree dive angle.
Left a nice smoking hole... really, it was actually smoking for a few seconds... water in the soil evaporating on the hot engine I think. Looked nice.

What a bummer. It sure ain't fun to pick up all those pieces. But 180mph.... come on dude. I have watched a lot of pylon racers go in full bore in the 150 - 170 range and the biggest piece left of their plane including the engine is smaller than the smallest piece in your pictures. And those planes are CF reinforced composite planes, not balsa. They litteraly explode on impact! A very expensive and cool thing to see! When you are flying at 170mph, there isn't a whole lot of time for dumb-thumb corrections.
Break out the CA and start-a-gluin!

I take it you've never seen a Magnum? I can assure you that 180 is a VERY safe assumption.
Mind you, I was a bit surprised to see that much left too. It did go in wings level, but still... Pylon planes on the other hand, tend to go in on a wing... curious how that happens
No CA on this one... The new Magnum R is better built and is only 135 euro...

A magnum won't go that fast. 120 to 130 is the fastest ever reported on that air frame. The claims that that is a 200 mph airplane are false. The drag alone won't get you there.
Regardless, if that's the fastest airplane you've ever flown, I can see how it would sure seem like it was going 180.
Trust me, I've flown jets in the 200 mph range and only the fastest of pylon racers come close to what a true 180 speed is.
Don't let these facts take away from the magnum though, they are very quick for their size and very awesome!!

Sean,
The fastest of pylon racers are doing about 220 to 230 mph on a flat stretch...
Heck, even a Q500 is good for close to 150... and that is an average speed while flying the course...

There is some good radar gun data showing well over 140 in level flight for the Magnum. Very nice aircraft...well balanced design. West 50 pulls it along very well with the correct prop selection. Since it was going full throttle down hill 45 deg at the time, speed approaching 160-180 is not out of the question.
Rudeboy is no rookie. Maybe he is off a few mph....... but you can take his word.....it was movin
Looks like the fuel tank survived at least
(edit sp)

While I will make no statements about the accuracy of the radar gun, we had a funfly last year where one of our club members flew a magnum. According to the gun (and it was used on several passes) the speed was 180mph. However, I will point out that the guy flying it had it in a pretty steep dive toward the field before he leveled out. Possibly this is where the extra speed came from.
