I cleaned my plane all up for the new season and marched off to the field..... I put the plane together, checked everthing out and flipped the OS 1.08; man I love this plane; Goldberg Extra300 with an OS 1.08; great power, fantastic idle, all is well. Taxied out, added power, the tail came up, I let it roll to the end of the runway and slowly watched her lift off..... a thing of beauty. I kept her low as banked over the wheat field; poetry in motion..... as I hit downwind, I gained some height and checked the trim; hands off picture of heaven; another year off to a great start...... then, she rolled to the right; I check the roll to no avail..... she was on her back... hey am I doing this through osmosis? Did I piss the pilot off? The rolls continued and I pulled the power back to check the speed.... she headed down; I shouted "I've lost her" and sure enough, she rolled inverted and hit the wheat. I stood there like a ruptured duck and played the last 15 seconds through my shocked cranial mass..... another mystery that needed to be pieced together.
Post flight conclusion showed an almost totally pulled "Y" harness connector to the ailerons..... something I DID NOT check. Extra300 cracked in half, wing damaged at mounting point. Needless to say, there is a slightly used, well broken-in, non-damaged OS 1.08 on the "Classified" section of RCUniverse. I have a smaller Extra300 that will have to get me through the season. Valuable lesson that I hated to learn.
There is always another trip to the scene of the accident; just hope they are few and far between.... what a great hobby!!!

Navy , I guess you didn't pick up the pieces ? Also is the smaller 300 made by Goldberg ? sorry for the loss it happens and it makes us better pilots.

Gee, you should hang on to the engine untill you can build something else for it. I have a 15(or there about) year old OS 1.08 on a Lazy Ace. IMHO one of the best of the OS engines.

I find it rather disturbing and even more disappointing to discover that while a few of the corespondents to this thread are famililar with the move "Thirty Seconds Over Tokyo", it seems none have read the book of the same title by Ted W. Lawson, a participant in the raid, and few seem to have any knowledge of the raid, the source of the term "Ruptured Duck" or the significance of the Doolittle raid.
If it is true, as I believe it is, that those who do not learn from history are doomed to repeat it, we are well and truly screwed.

Sorry my reference to "ruptured duck" brought about so much interest. We use that term to define any plane in the death throws of its final flight. I had a ruptured duck for about 7 seconds while it cork screwed into the wheat field. If you are at our field, you may hear that term yelled out.... it is most appropriate as the last word of the term is "DUCK!!"
The movie variant is a B-25 Mitchell which had a port engine that was running like most Magnums (oh boy, shouldn't of said that).....

The smaller Extra300 is from the House of Balsa kit..... 1/5th scale; very nice build and with an OS46Fx up front with the Tower pipe, it moves very fast.... it is a handful to fly but very exillerating. My guess is I will not have much of it left by the end of the season... I love to fly it fast and very low across the rwy. I have built two but am considering the GP 40 extra next.... I think the flt characteristics sound alittle more forgiving. That little HOB Extra can really move though.
