Stall during turn = Decathalon tore apart.
Well, I had fun with her. Maybe got 25 flights out of her. Taught me about stalls when you pull too hard without sufficient airspeed. I was turning back from downfield. It stalled briefly when I pulled a little to hard during the turn and it rolled right, so I nosed down to build airspeed, but simply not enough altitude. Just as I tried to gently pull out to avoid CFIT (controlled flight into terrain), it stalled again. It was either pull out too hard and stall it, or don't pull hard enough and dive into the ground.
Didn't hit hard, really, but in just the wrong way. I take full responsibility, and will launch an immediate investigation.
As you can tell by the last picture, my daughter's face tell's the story.
I will not repair this one. Will build and fly another tho!

Yes, Paul, it was a beautiful plane. It sells as a 40 size, but after its first few flights, I could tell it was way underpowered with an Evolution 40, so i put a 60 in it, and even that was only just enough. It has a real big wide fuselage that pushes a lot of air. It slows down quickly after a dive.
Thanks for the thoughts!

Wow, ...sorry for your loss!!
Was that a kit, and if it was, which one? I had a Great Plane decathlon and it was....a scarry bird to fly, nice to build but a bit vicious in the air...Spin took three turns and a lot of reverse controls to recover, and accelerated stall and secondary stalls were not unusual at all
I striped it down, new cvering, new paint and sold it.

<<So scrappy what field do you fly at?>>
Dennis,
I'm looking for a field to fly at. Just found out about Hilltoppers, in Sumpter, near Belleville. Right now I fly at Elwell Elementary's soccer field, with permission from the school (after hours, of course), and at a private farm near Dexter.

It was an ARF from Seagull Planes. Really beautiful, excellent quality for the price. It wasn't so difficult to fly so much, it was more about my inexperience.

scrappycat....When I have noted high speed stalls in turns I consider adjusting the elevator to allow less movement.

Looks like the kids are all smiles so I guess they're ok. I wouldn't suggest they ride in another one of your planes if you continue to use that type of pushrod hookup (EZ type connectors) at the servo arm for other than a throttle linkage. That's an accident waiting to happen if you ask me.
Sorry about your loss of such a nice plane.

Scrappy,
Have you checked out Milan yet ? They fly near Plank & US23. I need to go to a field to get a little training help. I've got one plane that keeps getting beat HARD !! It seems to take it pretty good though. A little glue and Mono coat and she's up again. I've been out in the corn fields trying to get some time in. I've got little ones at home and the wife in school so its a little hard to get out. Next time I crash , I'll put a pic online !!

Seen a couple of Seagull Super Decathlons-neither owner liked them much. They were underpowered with a 46 and I could see why... they are heavy. Next time you might try the Thunder Tiger S/D. Though they cost a little more, they are lighter, prettier and they fly great with a 46

Hi Andy,
Yes, I did visit Milan's field one time. Seemed real nice. The folks at Riders in Ypsilanti/Ann Arbor go there. It's a little further from my house than Hilltoppers. If you are close enough, check out Hilltoppers. There isn't a dang tree for miles, and you are literally on top of a hill. Great for unobstructed flying!

Wing,

I agree. My first couple of crashes were tip stalls on take off, not waiting long enough for airspeed. But even once up, it was lethargic, definitely underpowered. I do not consider this an intermediate plane (that was how it was sold to me) when it is underpowered.

Mike,
I pass HillToppers on my way home from work. I can get to Milan in 10 minutes or Sumtper in about 25. I need to get a new Radio , mines an old wide band AM , not very welcome !! LOL I do like the idea of no trees, I can hit a tree no matter how fast it runs.
