Default What constitutes a crash?

Does a broken prop on a poor landing count as a crash? How about bent landing gear?

I always consider a crash as at least something that you have to take home to fix before flying again, to the extreme where there is nothing left but a pile of broken balsa and strips of covering, and having to dig the engine out of several inches of the ground.

In some circles, it is said that if you only have to bend over once to retrieve your plane, it's a good landing. A good landing is not a crash!

You're welcome!

Flyboy Dave,

You did not crash correctly. There were still big peices leftover. J/K

I look at it like this. A broken prop or bent landing gear is easily replaced/fixed and if you have the stuff with you so anything that can be fixed quickly and at the field is to me not considered a crash

A crash to me is when you need a trash bag or even a little sandwich baggie [X(] to go and pickup your plane. A really bad crash is when all flying stops because it's scattered up and down the runway or because it went in over a hill and it sounded so bad that everyone wants to see it before you go and pick it up and put it in the trash bag/baggie. Bill, I was just ''passin'' through and saw your post reply, your remark actually made me start laughing a little. I will give it somemore thought on correct ways to crash. My problem is not so hard having to explain a crash to one wife but ........... enough for now, seeya, MM

So, y'see, there ARE times when I'm glad I'm single. Only have to answer to the cat and I can just not feed her if I don't like the tone of her meow [>:], but then I have to keep my planes away from her claws [:@] which, technically would not be a crash, but I would imagine a trash bag would do just fine to pick up the pieces.[:'(]

This came from my dad actually...

At the beginning of this year I planted a 25% Cap232. My dad was there to watch it and after I tossed everything into the back of the truck he looked at me really serious looking and said "I thought I told you that if you want to do something do it correctly or not at all So get back out there and crash it correctly since there still are big pieces left"

I laughed my butt off to the point my eyes were tearing and my side hurt so bad.

To me, a crash is unplanned or forceful contact with the ground and anything attached to the ground or another airplane.

That something breaks is just a bonus.

How about if the structure is damaged, it's a crash.

This is my friend's Top Flite P-47 after a 120mph, below ground level pass. He made a complete pattern and made a normal landing with gear down. Only damage was the prop and some grass stuck in a wheel well!

With the engine still running I might add.

Its not a crash unless it takes 2 trash bags to pick up the mess and you have to pull the engine out of the ground.

I agree with the bend over twice rule, or the need for a bag or basket for the parts.

hehe.....right you are Tork...it was a Kadet.....sort of.......he took a Kadet and widened the fuse.....lengthened the wing,...and made a twin engine out of it. Heres some building pics. It had quite a few flights on it before some kind of structural failure sent it straight into the desert.

If it requires any work, due to a hard landing, its a crash.

A crash is defined as :

Any event which happens to an aircraft during takeoff, flight, or landing which results in total destruction, or which would require structural repairs, and recovering or repainting of all or part of the aircraft to make it ready for flight again.

Anything else is just a bad landing.

A while back one of our fellow members stated something like this, that a crash isn't a crash unless the debris field is 10x wingspan and engine is 3xlength deep in the ground. And don't forget an aid in the crash......SPEED, SPEED, SPEED.
If that member is still around, pls correct my quote.
