RE: A big crash.....
Even though our field is electric only, mostly parkfler field, we often have from 5 to 8 planes in the air at the same time in a very small area. Not to mention all our planes are all different kinds, from slow sticks to fast warbirds to some larger planes in the .15-.40 size range. After about 10 months I've had 3 midairs, although luckily only one that was serious. I'm really rather surprised we don't have more though.
Well, sorry about the planes, but I'd expect it was at least quite spectacular.

Fortunately the models are not mine!! They are of two mine friends of my group!!
The Extra 300 was in phase of landing while the Gee Bee was making a low passage at high speed!!

Sad, but at least it probably looked cool. Not to point fingers, but the guy flying the Gee Bee shouldn't have been flying over the runway when another pilot is trying to land. At our field we allow up to 4 planes in the air, but we all clearly anounce our intentins I.E. taxi, take-off, landing, deadstick, etc. The guy flying the extra should have yelled "Landing"!, and all other pilots should have stayed clear of the runway until the pilot anounced "off the runway"! By doing this, both planes would still be flying.

It sucks but looks impressive. You can't see the left wing of the GB but it seems it was a perfect head on, like they were playing chicken.
Due to the short fuse of the GB I don't think the extra won if you take damage/inch. If your friends are planning to play again a one foot long spinner wouls be a great asset

"That's why we only let one plane up at a time"...What kind of s tatement is that? Fly the pattern, maintain a safe distance, and use a caller. We sometimes have 6 - 8 planes in the air at one time at our field. I'm sure glad the FAA allows more than one plane up at a time.

G'day
My club does not have a limit on how many people can fly at once, it is mainly up to how the pilot feels about flying in a crowded airspace. I remember once we had 11 planes up in the air at once. I ended up having to deadstick my landing so I could get a clear landing. (ran out of fuel)

Sorry about the planes, its always sad, but as mentioned, we've all had it happen, and it can be rewarding to watch. Our club allows 4-5 planes at a time. But its so slow out their, we all usually just fly one at a time, maybe 2. Most guys don't mind waiting to give the other pilot free airspace as they know 10 minutes later they will have the air all to themselves.
We had a club member come out yesterday to fly. Having only been in the club a few months I had never met him, but he is 92yrs old, and still flys... kind of. He taxi's and takes the planes off, but then hands the box over as he cannot see past the runway. I watched 2 planes go in yesterday in 5 minutes. He said "well I guess thats it for today, see you next week"
and was told by other members that he would be back, with the same plane, and will fly it again.
New rule for myself. I will NEVER leave home without my TX, Glo Stick, or CAMERA !!!!!! You never know what your going to see out their .... Greg
