What a fun forum!

Here's my 1st contribution to the "shady" side of r/c. I have some more that I'll share later.

A buddy and I had some great fun doing highspeed (probably in the 75-90 mph range) low alt flybys. The idea was to start high and dive for speed while still far away, then an the approach, transition into a long shallow dive and then level out at 3 feet, just before field center. Wouldn't you know it but my TX goes into failsafe just BEFORE the designated "level out at 3 feet" point. So I get to see the Mustang contact the ground at full speed, full throttle, wings level and fuse almost level (shallow dive remember?). THe plane hits the ground and skips back into the air trailing clods of dirt, and grass all the way. Engine stopped on impact. Plane glides another 200 feet down range to land gear-up out in the field. The engine was hanging by throttle cable and fuel line, preserving the model's CG. Only damage was a tiny bit of the fuse that contacts the top fo the removeable lower cowl, the removeable lower cowl itself, aluminum engine mount, and propeller!

Sorry to hear that, but then again, it could have been much worse. Maybe you should try leveling out at 5' next time.

Cause was determined to be a catastrophic failure of the main power coupling leading to the PEW 32 Deuterium Space Modulatorrrr no doubt!

Exactly! Do you want a little control or none at all?

(lets not argue the point of PCM vs. PPM though. Its been done way too many times)

Righto!

Let's just say that the failsafe mode in this case, prevented the plane from straying from it's course. Since then the only mod I've made to my failsafe mode is to have the throttle chopped down to idle (duh!). This serves a dual purpose.

1) hopefully reduce the amount of engergy involved in the ensuing crash/impact.

2) in the case of the more common spurrious or momentary interference, the chopped throttle acts as a signal that such interferrence has happened and the search for a solution or source can be found.

Nuff said! Plane is still flying. Radio was sent in and re-tuned.
