This is preliminary information, subject to change, and may contain errors. Any errors in this report will be corrected when the final report has been completed.
On April 13, at approximately 1040 atlantic standard time, a Duraplane DURASTICK nonregistered homebuilt airplane, was damaged beyond repair following impact with terrain in St. Thomas, VI. The private pilot was not injured. The owner/pilot was operating the airplane under Title 14 CFR Part 103. Visual meteorological conditions prevailed for the personal flight that originated from Simón Pierre Field approximately 6 minutes before the accident. No flight plan had been filed.
The aircraft was observed flying the pattern in an inverted attitude. During a downwind turn the aircraft entered a rapid descent, terminating short of the airfield upon impact with the brush. The aircraft's wing was broken in two, as was the fuselage; the motor mount and firewall assembly seperated, and the aluminum tailboom was severely bent.
Addendum: The pilot reported that this was the Stick's third crash of the day. The previous crashes resulted on no damage other than a bent tailboom and loose nosegear.
The St. Thomas R/C Association Safety Board determines the probable cause(s) of this accident as follows:
OVERCONFIDENCE IN PERSONAL ABILITY.. PILOT IN COMMAND
