Boy oh boy, that sucked. I am amazed at your attitude about the whole thing. I think I would be a bit more upset, as it would affect me playing the piano.
A guy in my club had the same thing happen to his finger, then another guy had it happen. So the second guy was really upset, and asked the first guy "how did you deal with it?" The first guy replied, " simple, I pick my nose with the left hand now"
I thought that was pretty funny, but not the guy who lost his finger.

I had several conversations with Sig about that very thing and they agreed that it should be done. One thing we need to remember about these AFR's is that the company who sells them really has no idea what is going into the kits. Granted, they are responsible for the products they sell and are liable for injury caused by their products, but most of these kits are assembled in an overseas market and their QC is questionable at best.
Sig did stand beind their product in that they sent me a new Spacewalker kit but they were still open to liability for the injury. I chose not to press the issue because the bottom line is that I should not have been in front of the engine with it running full throttle on the ground. We all do it at one time or another but you can bet your sweet patootie I don't do it any more.
The thumb is all healed now and I'm back to flying and it doesn't cause any difficulties so far.
Only thing is, when I try to hitch hike now people can't see my thumb and they just think I'm waving at them.
When we build a kit it's an easy matter to reinforce the firewall as necessary. However, in an ARF, just go ahead and assume that the whole plane needs to be inspected and it is up to the buyer/flyer/builder to make it safe for himself.
Just my two cents, and if it ain't good enough, I have other opinions.

Hey Jim;
I'm a nurse,(former airline pilot), so I see that kind of thing all the time-but DAM! that is a serious injury! Actually, the suture line is pretty well aproximated and looks like it'll probably heal pretty good. Those APC props are like spinning scalpels-man I feel bad for you-but it could have been a lot worse. When I tach an engine, I do it from behind the prop, can you get as accurate a reading that way?
Take care and good luck on your rehab!
Ron

It was a moment of stupidity that let me check rpm from behind, I knew better. You can bet your ass I won't do it again. When it happened my tach got chewed up also and I bought a new Globee Tach. Pffffffffffft! What a turd that thing is. It says that my engine is running at 21000 rpm when it's at idle. Only way I can get it to read right is to point the plane directly at the sun and get the tach within one inch of the propeller. Can't make it work at all in dim light.
Oh well, such is life.
