Because it happened so fast, my guess is one motor stopped. I have flown twins.

Dang I hate to see such nice planes get broken, Looks like there is plenty left to repair thank goodness. I hope he gets it back in the air soon.

Hard to be sure, but if it were me I'd rather that be the cause than questionable equipment that then works fine after the fact. Had them both happen, at least with the former I *know* what happened!

CP, that was great! Thanks for the explanation. I figured the plane crashed cause it was jerry rigged.

Looked to me like a classic tip stall. He got it too slow and one wing stopped flying. Warbirds will do that. He should have let it down on the first landing attempt. Of course, everybody has 20/20 hindsight.
I would like to have an Me-262 of that size myself. I think the Joe Saitta kit is a lot bigger.

RE: Me-262 crashes on maiden flight/video
Anybody have any stats on this guys setup? What fans? Batteries? ESC? All up weight?
I am finishing one with BVM EVF 5612 fans, 45C packs...all up weight 38 pounds. So I am curious on this setup. Also was this DUmbThumbs old plane?
Thanks...

RE: Me-262 crashes on maiden flight/video
To All who saw my ME262 flight and crash:
Thanks for your kind words. The cause of the crash was due to the batteries reaching the low voltage cut off point on ESC's. Both motors quit at the same time and the airplane was in a bank and did not respond to power when needed.
Fault was mine for not being aware that the 12S-5600 LiPo battery packs need to be repetedly cycled before initial use. The batteries had been stored for about one year and then I topped them off the night before.
After the crash we cycled the batteries and it took 20 cycles to get them to perform as rated. Fans and speed controllers still worked and airplane is back together waiting for me to install all of the systems and to repaint the damaged areas.
The fans are from JetHanger International as are the batteries. Makor pont to consider with electric fans is that the input of the inlet cowl must be the same size as the fan inlet and have a smooth transition. On my first flight attempt the total thrust obtained was 13lbs total. After opening up the inlet cowling I had 28lbs of thrust.
If anybody wants more info just call let me know in this forum and I will respnd.
Thanks
Lou Lombardi

RE: Me-262 crashes on maiden flight/video
Sorry about your loss. I also have a built thread going on RCU on my 262. After much expermentation and testing. The best option I have found is the BVM 5612 fan running the 6600MAH 45C packs. This is putting out 19 pounds per engine on the bench. I have tested several different packs and combinations, also tested the aeronaut TF4000 fan...but the 5612 combo seems to be the best option.
It is critical to break in your Lipos, sorry this had to happen. I use a JHI Fury to break in my batteries and get them cycled a few times, before running them in the 262.
The tricky part for me on this project is battery location for CG. I see you put in a hatch where the gun hood went...that is an idea I considered, but did not work for me with CG.
Also the long leads from the batteries to the esc was another technical obstacle that I had to overcome.

Thanks for your reply.
If I had it to do over again I would use BVM fans and the set up you have. I am currently building a BVM F-4 and am a big fan of Violetts expertise which is light years beyond the other mfg's..
As far as CG is concerned the batteries were the key. I had one set of two located right behind the nose wheel bulkhead and the others right behind the forward set. My battery leads are 60" long and I had several conversations with Castle and ended up installing two additional large capacitors to each ESC to help mitigate the pulsing problems encoutered with long leads. Only problem is a huge arc when you connect the last battery lead.
The hatches worked great and make installing and removing the batteries a snap.
What does your 262 weigh? Mine is 42lbs with batteries installed about 8lbs. Even with about 14lbs of thrust for each engine it flew well. Yours should really motor with 32lbs of thrust.
Regards

Lou- Above is the build thread on mine. Some of the same trial and errors on my part. Blew 2 ESC, Smoked 4 Batteries etc.. Right now coming it at just shy of 39 pounds. Maybe a bit heavier with the 5612 fans. I think your in CA as well. Would like to see yours go again when your ready. I should maiden mine this month up at Rabbit.
You beat me to the punch on getting one of these flying. Bob Violett told me that there is a guy on the East coast getting close to maiden his. BVM 2.0 EVF fans in his.

RE: Me-262 crashes on maiden flight/video
I find it coincidental that i was pointed to this link the same day I spent some quality time with an ME-262 in RealFlight 5.5. The simulation does almost exactly the same thing (tip-stall?) at low speeds. Aggressive maneuvers at high speeds are problematic, too.

Posted some video of my final product and flights. The 262 flies very well, but you have to fly it smart. If you fly it scale, keep the manuevers realistic and monitor your airspeed, she performs. I hate to watch it...but crash pro got way too slow...we have learned to keep our airspeed up flair at the last few moments to bleed off speed. Also we have stopped using flaps all together on take off. The almost VTOL take off crash pro had was lucky he did not tip stall on take off. If you have the legnth of run way...(we have 800Ft plus) use no flaps and your take offs will be much more realistic and you will have much better airspeed to avoid stalling.
Good luck I hope to see your fly again
