Digital photography tutorial
I receive a lot of emails from RCU and magazine readers about photo techniques, so I decided to make a little digital RC photography tutorial online.
The tutorial is on my website http://www.john-christensen.com/Photointro.htm
If there are subjects you think is missing, please email me and I will try to add them.
I hope this is helpful to some.

RE: Digital photography tutorial
I love my new Nikon D70..I have had it for only 2 months and the best outing I have had with it thus far is at the Oceana Airshow here.I took 225 pics on my 1 gig memory card ,most of which turned out super.I still can't get over the quality of the pics and how close & detailed all the jets were.I took many shots with the aircraft over 300 feet away and I cant get over the crispness and clarity.I printed off a dozen or so and showed them to some buddies here, they were blown away and by the fact that I just got this thing. It really is that user friendly!!Certainly well worth every penny of the 1300.00 I spent
I'm loving this baby. What really amazes me is that I'm only using a 175.00 200 mm Quantaray lens.I'm more than happy with the camera and the current setup,I dont see any need to jump up to a higher end lens in my case.John great tutorial too bud, thanks so much for sharing with us!! Your truly are talented with photography!!

Bob-O,
I only shoot RAW because I use photos for magazines and large prints. Had it just been for my own personal use, I would only be using "jpeg large"
If you have Photoshop CS, you can import your RAW files directly which gives you better control over the end results, but it is really not needed.
Any of you TX guys going to be at Mesa next month?

Great site John. I sure hope that everyone sees it, as the quality of most photos we see here on RCU could improve dramatically.
"Concise and well-written with beautiful examples that perfectly illustrate the authors points"
"A must see for the amateur aviation photographer, or the professional looking to improve his skills, for that matter."
My brother-in-law gave it one and a half thumbs up (he lost half of his left thumb in a work related accident 20 years ago )
Good work John!

Hi Mario,
Yes, it's a big jungle out there when it comes to camera prices. There are a lot of "switch and bait" stores that will advertise a low price on the internet, and then charge you a ton of money for shipping and accessories. Royal Camera in NY is one of the biggest thief's on the internet. They advertise the D70 for $569, but there is no way they will sell it to you for that price, unless you buy hundreds of dollars worth of their overpriced accessories. If a deal is too good to be true... Well, you know
I have had very good luck with samy's camera. www.samys.com They have everything in stock, it's original US products (Don't buy cheap gray market cameras... You will regret it if you need repairs) Finally, at Samy's the prices are very fair. Plus, you will save the sales tax since you are in NY. B&H Photo in your area is another great online store, but you may be charged sales tax through them
A good budget but excellent lens for the D70 is the Tokina 80-200 f/2.8 AT-X 828AF lens.

Mario
John's advice is, as usual, excellent. I am using the Nikon D70s with the AFS Nikkor 18- 70 F3.5 / F4.5G ED zoom which came as a deal with the body. I also bought the Sigma F2.8 70 -200 APO zoom which is all you will need for superb results.
I would think this setup could be bought for around $1,500 in the US.

I've also done business with B&H, and can recommend them as a reputable company. Also, the Tokina lenses are a good choice for the "serious amateur".

RE: Digital photography tutorial
I know this is geared toward digital, but I find most all of this information to be true to any SLR. Excellent work John.
I went cheap (relatively) on my digital setup with a Cannon Powershot A95, if you don't mind editing out red eye in every shot with flash... it's a great camera for the price.
But I have two SLRs for film. I have a Cannon Rebel G2 with a Sigma 28-105mm f2.8. And my preferred camera, a Minolta SRT-102 (yes it is 35 years old) My favorite lens for this is a Minolta 55mm f1.2. But I also have a 35mm and a 120mm, as well as a 2x teleconverter and a pro55 adapter that will drop the focal length on my 55mm lens to less than an inch for the ultimate in extreme close ups. (Ok so the only thing I have ever used it on is some ants.. but it looked really good)
I would use the Minolta exclusively, but I have no zoom lenses so I end up having to switch lenses a lot and it is manual focus and especially on action shots it's hard to keep up. Sorry I don't have any examples of my work, but my subject for the past 19 months has been almost exclusively my son.
