If you are going to go for the Photoshop trial, I would suggest the Gimp. Open source and free!!
Unless you use every last function in Photoshop, the Gimp will be way more than adequate.
Easier way to get it is from here:

RE: FREE photo management (and editing) software???
Is there some way to decrease the file size of a jpg from my digital camera?
The CD software that came with the camera I cant use because it is not compatible with Win 2000
I use a little card reader to transfer the photos which works fine but all photos are 700k or more
I tried various methods and regardless if I crop the picture, the file size stays the same
There is nothing in the camera menu to decrease the resolution.
What to do?

Look at PICASA, mentioned earlier in the thread. It should work on Win2000 fine and lets you resize the photos, changing the file size at the same time. Also, look to change the quality of the picture, lower quality means lower file size. Experiment to see what works for you.

I have been using MGI Photosuite Ver. 8 for years and it is just right for me. Recently I got a copy of Picasa and while it is good, I still
like Photosuite better.

I use Picassa for photo management and Paint Shop Pro for advanced editing. With 20,000 photos on the PC, a good management tool is very necessary.

IrfanView comes with plug-in support (for image, video and music files), as well as an image explorer as a desktop shortcut for thumbnail views of the images. Irfan View is a very simple, yet powerful, potent, and popular photo editing program for free of cost. It supports all common and major types of image formats. Its light weight, fast, easy and versatile !Irfan View has recently gained a lots of popularity as a free image editing software among graphic designers,Bloggers, common users for its quick, simple and effective photo editing capacities.

I think Photoshop online is not bad, the features are quite full, it is useful for editing simple photos.

Another very nice free viewer/editor is FastStone Image Viewer (faststone.org/FSViewerDetail.htm).
It's got good photo management capabilities and is particularly good at looking through a large number of photos for the "keepers".
IrfanView is still the best (IMHO) for doing simple stuff super-quickly (irfanview.com).

I use Retouchme (here is the link, I know some might not hear about it). Although i like video editing I don't like to edit photos. I realize how important photo editing is for creating catching visual, I tried Snapseed, LightRoom, and VSCO as well but it takes so much time that I decided to look for alternatives how can I do it easier. I like the quality of the pictures that I get although I have never changed something dramatically like making myself fitter just colors editing.

Gimp is pretty good and considering that it’s free, it’s pretty spectacular.
PhotoscapeX is also a great app. The basic free package has a ton of presets and has some deeper editing functionality as well.
If you want something more photography oriented I recommend DarkTable which are sort of comparable to Lightroom .

FREE photo Editing software
I know some best free photo editing software that money can’t buy. While Adobe’s popular program may be the favourite of a lot of people out there, there’s obviously more than one option in this regard. If it’s just the price you have to pay for the said tool that’s bothering you, then you couldn’t have come to a more perfect place. Take a look at our list of best options and tell us if we’re right or right.
1. Paint.net
2. Photoscape
3. Photo Pos Pro
