Stud length

Now there's a subject line that could raise an eyebrow..

Hi Bob,

I was fiddling with my pylon prop assortment just received from APC, and when fitting one to my SJ50 last night to admire it I was concerned about the very small amount of prop stud remaining. The stud on mine measures 0.70" long, and the hubs on these 8.8" props measure around 0.56" - 0.57", leaving barely over 1/8" of thread engagement. That seems marginal to say the least, esp. with aluminum threads.

What's the scoop?

Thanks,

MJD

MJD,

Hope I'm not intruding here, but maybe I can be a bit of help. I have a recently purchased SJ 50. Mine came with two studs, one measures 1.25" and the other a bit longer at 1.5" total length. The longer one was packaged in with the muffler screws and gasket. You may want to dig around in the box a bit and see if you have the longer one. I used it for the reason you mentioned with the pylon props.

Hey...

Thanks for writing :)

The threaded stud can be adjusted a bit. Dub also has 2 sizes available if needed.

The normal installation on the prop stud, is to thread it into the crankshaft all the way until it stops, then back it out about 2 turns. You do not want it to bottom out in the crankshaft.

To make it longer, you can back the stud out a bit more. Take the stud out, thread it back in a mimimum of 8 turns. This gives you about 3/16" of adjustment.

Ah yes.. I never even tried, but the stub loosened up with a gentle tweak, and indeed I can get it in 8 turns or more and have enough engagement for the pylon prop hubs. That was simple..

Ya loin sometin' new every day..

Thanks!
