Default Help choosing power

I am new to electric flight. I purchased an eflite 60 size motor for the below plane. The motor is too long. Is this too much motor for this plane or would you recommend something smaller. I have a 80 size esc for it.

The Eflite 60 is recommended for planes in the 6 to 12 lbs range. The Sbach342 50E 3D is in the 4.6 to 5.3 ibs range so it is not that surprising that the motor does not easily fit.

For 'new to electric' you do seem to have jumped right in!
Personally I would have recommended something a bit more modest to get some experience with electric power set ups.

I guess I should have qualified new. I have been flying for 6 years, including a few electrics that were already with the planes I bought. This is my first plane that I bought the motor and esc separate. I appreciate your comment but you really didn't answer my question.

This will be a helpful resource:

EVERYTHING YOU WANTED TO KNOW ABOUT ELECTRIC POWERED FLIGHT
http://www.rcuniverse.com/forum/m_7100376/tm.htm

But beyond that there is always the matter of looking at the size specs for the motor and the space in the plane to see if the motor will fit. Not really different from anything else.

So, clearly you NEED a smaller motor since the one you have does not fit. That is obvious.

As you will read in the chapter on sizing your plane you size by watts/pound. The weight of your plane is roughly 5.3 pounds. So you will want a motor rated at 400 to 800 watts depending on what kind of performance you want.

Looks like they are recommending a 14" prop so we know that will fit the plane with required ground clearance.

We could run one of the calculators:

Assuming a 4S pack:

If you were going to consider these motors then you would want to look at the physical specs to see if they will fit.
