Default Batteries - rule of thumb?

Is there a rule of thumb to calculate fast charge rates for NiCads? Batteries have their slow charge rates written on them, but how can I calculate a safe rate for fast charging?

My rule of thumb for charging NiCds is 3 times their capacity, or 3C. Say you have a 2400mAh NiCd pack. You can safely charge it at up to 7.2 Amps, or 7200mA. Not many chargers will charge at that high of a rate, though.

Check out www.rcbatteryclinic.com for some good info. 3C is quite high, 2C is safer on NiCads. On NiMh most manufactures recommend to not exceed 1C. On either type, always do the first two or three charges at 0.1C to get maximum capacity of your battery. Also do this slow charge if the cells have been in storage for a long time.
