Default Can old battries be saved?

Typical newbie question. So here it goes. Have just recently got a PT Electric with a Futaba Model 4 radio . The batteries have not been used in 3 years. Do you think that they will still work? I will try charging them to see what happens. If they take a charge I have heard that it is best to discharge and then recharge them a couple of times. Thanks for your help with a newbie question. Depending on how they were stored, they may be okay. The only way to be sure is to do what you planned. Charge at 0.1C for 16 hours and then measure discharge time at not greater than 1C. Do this three times and, if the batteries come up to 80% of rating, I think it would be safe to use them.
