It is my understanding you submerge them in a tub of salt water then pierce the covering and let them soak in it for a couple hours. then they are safe to dispose of.

Don't pierce them!!! Just make a solution of salt water with as much salt as you can dissolve into the water then drop your battery in there over night and that should take the charge down to zero. Then toss it after checking with a volt meter that it has no charge.

Off of the FMA Direct site

- LiPo: puncture plastic envelope, immerse in salt water for several hours, place in regular trash.

Tanic says puncture and immerse in salt water AFTER THE PACK HAS BEEN DISCHARGED! If you puncture a pack with a charge in it you may or may not cause fire. I wouldn't take that risk.

I thought you puncture it while submerged to avoid the fire. The salt water would keep oxygen from feeding the chemicals in the pack and diffuse it. Not 100% sure. Anyone?

I've seen varying instructions on this. However alot of it says to discharge then soak and puncture. Some says to puncture and then soak. I also read a pack can flame underwater so go figure. Overall it is probably safest to remove the charge then puncture/soak from most of what I just found here and on google

ask one hundred people, you'll probably get a hundred answers! In my experience, (I've trashed a few lipo packs) after letting them soak for a day or so there was zero voltage when tested with a digital volt meter. I then simply tossed them in the trash can as that seemed safe to me.
