My friend just got a CX-2 E-Flight and when he pluged in the charger it smoked. What did he do wrong?

6min for 7MB? jeez, that cx2 manual download is way too slow! should've taken me under 1min.

anyways, i just wanted to take a peak at the manual to see what kind of charger it comes with so i can help (don't have a cx2 myself, but know a few things about lipos).

the cx2 comes with a charger that will do 2S and 3S lipos. he didn't accidentally force his 2S pack to fit in the chargers 3S 11.1V port did he? (see page 12 of the manual)

Sounds like a call to E-flite is in order. If it's brand new and he followed the manual, they should replace it under warranty.

Is there any faster charge times on the lipos?
I bought 3 spare batteries to keep me running in between charges.
An hour to get 10 or so min of flight? Something must be better.
The heli itsself if great im having lots of fun and im learning faster on this rather than the fixed pitch I had before.

all lipos are technically limited to a 1C charge, which means it takes at least an hour to safely charge a lipo. although there are chargers designed to charge lipos faster, there are no exceptions to this rule of safety. if you are fully charging a lipo in under an hour, you are running a significantly increased risk of fire.

the most affordable way to "fly all day" is to buy a few extra chargers to go with your extra packs. if i remember right, you'd need about 5 batteries and 4 chargers to fly continuously.

Get a CellPro 4S. It uses a ranging voltage charging system to safly charge LiPOs in 50min. It can also charge them hot, straight out of the heli thatnx to it's ranging charge system.

teamchrome, here's what I did.

I bought two LiPo Balance Chargers (VEN-0653) from [link=http://www.venom-group.com/]Venom Group[/link]. They include A/C adaptors and are less expnsive than buying a stock E-flite units and adding an A/C adapter. The Venom chargers have the same sockets and polarity as the stock chagers, so everything works perfectly with no modifications.

Beside lower cost, here's another nice feature - they charge at a slightly higher rate than the stock chargers. It isn't much higher, but it seems to decrease charge times by 20-30 minutes.

If you don' want to go that route, just pick up a second stock charger as long as you have multiple batteries. Just by doing that, you essentially cut your charging time in half.

There are faster (and more expensive) chargers available, but because of the volatile nature of LiPo batteries, I personally would stay away from any charger that is capable of high current charging, or charging additional battery types like NiCd or NiMh.

I'd really hate to burn down the house because I set some stupid switch on my charger to the wrong position!

nice find don!

i agree with the use of multiple stock (or venom) chargers. been through this before. 2 stock chargers will get 2 batteries done in 1.5hr (or 1 pack per 45min), instead of 1 pack in 50min. add a third charger (which costs about as much as the cellpro), and you'll have a pack every 30min. stock chargers are much cheaper, and having a few of them safely allows much faster charging when you break it down in to packs per hour.
