I took an old pair of needle nose pliers and wrapped several turns of electrical tape around the jaws. I use these to hold the motor leads when connecting or disconnecting them. The tape keeps them from damaging the insulation. It's also easier to see what you are doing if you remove the battery strap when working with the leads.

Better still, just use a receiver battery to power your servos when you're doing maintenance / setup. Just unplug the ESC at the receiver and plug in a 4.8v receiver battery. Make sure you don't plug the receiver battery in while the ESC is connected to the receiver.

This has the benefit of avoiding any possibility of inadverent spin-up of the rotors as well as keeping you from having to plug and unplug those important motor connectors.

Yep, that was me. Hence the caution to unplug the ESC and plug the receiver battery into that connection on the receiver. As another poster here said, you could just use throttle hold but if you forget or accidently hit that switch you could be in real trouble. Trust me, using a reciever battery is easy and safe. It also has the advantage of not running down your flight battery. Once you do get everything setup, you can have a fully charged battery to go fly with!

Even better still, run a short (3" or so) servo extension from the throttle plug on the Rx to the outside and tie it off to the frame. Now it's easy to unplug the motor/ESC and plug in a 4.8V battery for all your adjustments without worrying out getting slapped in the face by the blades or unplugging the motor.

External battery for setup and testing is the way to go! I never unplug my motors anymore and that's a good thing. The more you disconnect / re-connect those motor leads, the looser they get and this 'could' lead to a high resistance connection, which would be bad.
