50mph, how do you have it hanging on the wall? I been wanting to do the same thing. Is it just string behind the landing gear?

And I agree; nice hangar!

I used a plastic drywall insert, sometimes called an E-Z Anchor,

and on the 540T and Eratix I used a drywall screw, most hardware stores carry these. On the planes hanging from the ceiling I used a swivel clip used for fishing gear. Yes they are hanging by the landing gear. Just make sure what ever you do, the plane weight will support your screw and choose a good string that won’t break.

As for hanging planes, my wife allows me this room. I do have some other planes not shown here on a ledge that overhangs our main entrance. They are tucked away enough that she doesn’t get to upset. After all, the worse place is the garage during the winter months.

Thanks for your hanger comments.

I created a second version of the same video with better light and color adjustments. The original video was dark and the Edge 540T was less easy to see since it blended in with the sky colors. The new larger 16.5meg video looks much better.

My edge is finished the weather in nebraska is terrible right now it has been really cold and snowing. My plane has the recommended motor in it i have a castle creations 60 amp sc and the cc bec this little unit took me a long time to solder together but the plane is now ready to fly. I'm still waiting for the carbon fiber landing gear and wheel pants to come in just for cool factor but i really want to fly it now especially after watching that video.

I finally finished my build, except for the Rx placement. Can someone post pics of thiers? I'm using the AR7000 and can find no good place to stick it. I'm a bit limited by the length of the ESC lead (using the Silver Series 35a with CC BEC out of necessity) so my RX ends up just aft of the battery tray once everything's plugged in.

I know I shouldn't use the 35a esc but I have no choice and this thing's gotta maiden tomorow or it will just explode.

Where is everyone putting thier RX?

There's nothing wrong with using a short extension on the ESC lead. I've done it a couple of times.

Wingwrecker, I bought a JR 6" RX extension and it worked out just great! I got this tip from 50MPH. Good choice on the AR7000! I am using a scorpion 3026-12 with their 60A esc which has about 11" of lead. Im not sure how much wire you have comming off the esc, but with my combination i was able to mount the main antenna on the rudder servo tray in the middle of the plane and they piggy antenna on the top rail on the side of the fuselage a few inches away. I was able to do this because i eliminated the pull pull rudder system and mounted it as a push pull. I hope this helps you out!

Yeah Ill have to use an extension and figure out a good spot. Lot's of room to move the battery around so CG should be OK. Thanks for the info!

2 flights and I am still shaking

The plane is great. It is different and I never expected these flight characteristics. I was thinking because of its size it would not float like it does. It only takes a little to roll; I need to re-look my Aile Expo. I was scared op use the recommended elevator low rates, only a half inch. After seeing this dialed in I was like no way. Well I set everything for as much as I can. That is normally what I do on everything.

This plane fly’s great and will turn on a dime. I am using 2200 3S and I flew for 3 minutes. I had 70% power left when I landed. I say not problem getting 6 minutes of easy flying.

I added 3 clicks to my aile, and without that the plane rolled like it was at full left.

Soft easy movements are what make this plane fly well. Yank the stick and get ready for corrections.

Hey guys, I put mine in the dirt last week, it looked terryble at first, but isn't as bad as it looks, I just need a new fusselage and I'm readty to go again, as for the electronict, nothing broke, but I'm going to monitore the battery for a wile. Hope the fuselage arrives on thursday so I can have it ready for the weekend.

WINGWRECKER,
I took your advise and got the 4S batteries and it realy flys awesome, buy the way the turnigy 42 50 700 fist perfect if yuo file the holes on the mount a lidle longer. And for those that whant to safe a lot of money. My setup is working just fine.If not better than the recomended setup and I only payd for Motor, ESC and BAtteries around $ 125.00 + ship.

I have turnigy 35-48 800kv and 14x7 prop on mine and it also fits perfect. I did the same thing as you. I simply popped out the blind nuts. Stuck a 1/8 drill bit in the hole and filed down the inside a little. It fit perfect. Cowl lines up great. Im very happy. I also used turnigy esc and servos. All fit and work great.

and hobbycity flightmax 4cell 2200 lipos!

I crashed mine good today. It is destroyed. I just bought and installed a new JR x9303 2.5 GHz radio specifically to avoid this kind of thing and that's what I was using. I was flying it pretty close to me, and it completely ceased to respond to my controls. Total radio failure. My transmitter stayed on the whole time, and when I walked up to it the pile on the ground was jittering like it was having a seizure. Then I picked it up and it stopped the jitters. Previously it had passed the range test on this airplane and on 2 others with no problems. I have about 10-15 flights with this new radio without any problems. Some people think that it is probably because the antenna could have easily have been intermittently touching some graphite parts of the airframe. I don’t know. Disgusting. But be warned guys, there is a ton of graphite on this airframe. find a way to keep your antenna off of it.

Stiltman,
Sorry to hear that the ground gopher attacked your plane. They attacked mine on wed. I am not up to date on the futaba 2.4, but i do know that if the receiver battery is low, it will cut off and try and re-boot. This tends to happen if you fly a little longer than the battery can handle. As far as the antennas, i mounted my main receiver on the servo mount for the pull-pull rudder as i mouned mine as a push pull. I glued a piece of wood onto the servo tray, i glued some 1/4" foam to it and then added some sticky backed velcro to the foam and to the back of the receiver to keep it in place. I am funning the spektrum 6200 so i had a piggie back that i mouned ont the rib, just above the wing jointer bolt the same way. This worked great for me as i had no problems with radio reception. Mine 540 bit the dust do to low altitude rolls in high winds! I do have to say i am not very happy with the way the plane broke apart. I do understand it is a very light weight plane, but i managed to "land" it on the wheels at a pretty low speed. That being said it ripped the landing gear back and destroying the asembly inside the fuselage, poked holes in the wings from the wheel pants and broke the spar in each wing! And it landed on both wheels! so be that as it may, i hope you get it fixed and back up in the air asap!

As with mine ,I have to say that I was impresed how well it holded together. It came down verticaly down and some how it managed to brake only at the fuse.I don;t now how this is possible.I realy was impresed.

Thanks for the condolences. I figured the reason the damage was so extensive was do to the weight of my 5s lipo at 17oz. The plane is probally salvageable buying a new fuselage but who is to say it wont happen again. With the time and energy that the edge 540 is going to require to fix, i'm probally just going to put it on the back burner and fly my Super Stick for now.

You were using 5S, holly cow!!!!! So with the added weight did you notice it was too heavy? Was it hard to control? I am thinking of going from my 2200 3S to a 3200 4S at 14oz. The 3s gives me enough power to do anything except 3D is not as extreme. Sorry about your hitting the ground, I have done that and it just brings me down.

I did get 3 more flights in this morning on the Edge. I think I am starting to like this plane.

I normally run my Rhino 4s 2350 25c (262 grams) and love it. I recently tried my Zippy-H 4s 4000 25c (473 grams) and noticed a pretty dramatic difference. I could get the CG correct but it wouldnt climb as fast, though still unlimited vertical. And it handled differently. I could probably get used to it and the flight times are definately longer, but right now I am preferring the lighter battery.
With vertical till I say stop, it's hard to stay off the throttle so my flight times are short, but once I get over it and employ some throttle management things should be fine.

I hope to get my 3D video shot today. It's only 20 degrees and snowy...but relatively calm at 5-10mph. Over the holiday break it was always windy. We'll see what happens.

stiltman,

It didn't see your setup listed or what type of flying you were doing. Were you using an external BEC?

The servos would not jitter if it was simply a loss of signal so I suspect a receiver reset condition occurred. When using digital servos or a 4s pack, I would recommend an external BEC. Sorry for your loss.

50mph,

The 5s 4250mAh evo lite was great, and even being a massive power house it only weighed 17oz! So it wasnt too bad. I was running the scorpion 3026-12 motor with an APC 10x7 prop. With the watt meter plugged in static on the ground it was pulling 800mAh wide open. The power was great, never needing to go full power giving me flight times in the 8-10 minute range! As far as weight goes, i put the battery in the tray and put in on the CG and it was right where it was suppose to be. Preformance was good as the loops were tight and rolls were quick with unlimited verticle abliliy. I never got it to hover good as i only had 6 flights on it, but it is very light and any wind throws it around. As far as batteries go bigger is better, just my 2 cents.

Default RE: Great Planes Edge 540T

Our opportunity to test the Edge 540T for 3D flying came on a relatively calm but cold day. The winds were about 5mph and the temperature about 20 degrees F. We used the recommend 3D setup on high rates with the 12x6 e-prop and 4-cell 2100mAh pack. I put the pack up further after my last pilot said it was a bit tail heavy, but after the 3D flight, we decided that it was fine where I show it in the earlier photo.

In short, there wasn't anything that the Edge 540T didn't do well. Although the power was good, it could have used a bit more so perhaps trying a 13" prop would help. The sturdy yet light design allowed the Edge 540T to perform perfectly...even in the cold!

Nice vid! Coulda used a flat spin though. It's the one thing I can't see to get out of this one; a nice FLAT spin. I just wanna see if anyone else can make this plane do it!

Thanks for the post!

Nice video and good job with the report. Mine still scares me sometimes when I forget how light the plane is.
