Default ESC not working... how to test?

I have several used ESC's that I got from a friend plus motors and he believed they all should work but has been 3 years in a box in his house.... All of the ESC's have worked except one large one (100) that requires a battery for the flight controls/receiver/servos... (Is not a BEC) I can not get the motor to run and I am using the same transmitter and receiver in a test set up... The receiver lights up and works as does the servos with the receiver battery... The motor does not respond in anyway using a 5 cell battery.... How can I test this ESC...other than what I have done so far....

Thanks....
