am i right in thinking that no company out there makes a combat module that will suit any model? all it needs to do is take a spare channel from the reciever.

That is correct. The only commercially-available combat module that I have ever seen is ParkZone's for the Firebird/Aerobird series of RTF planes. It's not compatible with "regular" radio systems.
Frankly, I have yet to see one in action. Regular streamer combat is only a fringe activity (unfortunately). The ParkZone combat module would have to be a whole lot more popular to give companies a profit motive to come up with one for regular planes.

Friends and I use the PZ module and it works pretty good. The big drawback is where its mounted, on the bottom of the plane. So, We are retrofitting it for the top of the plane. We all just need a company to take a chance and build a generic combat module. It'll happen, hopefully. Perhaps company specific like JR or Futaba? Couldn't it work fine tied to a specific tx/rx? Because I will say this We have had a ton of fun with Our V-tails flying combat. Can you imagine then making it freq specific? Clubs could face clubs! Anyways, sometimes it takes a chance to make something popular.
