Default Newb to fm radios, need help.

Im into boats not 4ch airplanes and Radio Junk. Im making a GWS Beaver. Trying to save money while im at it by using a Heli Transmiter that i already have. I have an FM Century [link=http://www3.towerhobbies.com/cgi-bin/wti0001p?&I=LXMGV9&P=7]Elite[/link] and wanted to use a Great Planes [link=http://www3.towerhobbies.com/cgi-bin/wti0001p?&I=LXCRK1&P=7]Reciever[/link]. Will this combination work? If so, High band or Low band? I have a Crystal for it already that came with the Heli and it is a 72 MHZ crystal. Srry if this doesnt make much sense. I am a newb. Thanks Alot for any help.

It looks like the ElectriFly 4-channel receiver ought to work with your transmitter. It automatically detects the correct transmitter shift. You should also get the matching ElectriFly receiver crystal for your transmitter's channel to ensure you will be on the right frequency. Other receiver brands and their matching crystals would also probably work for you. It is important to get the receiver crystal from the receiver's manufacturer to be sure you are receiving the right channel frequency. Good luck with the Beaver.

As for the High band or Low band, it will depend on the channel of your transmitter...

If your transmitter is on channel 11 - 35, you'll need a Low band receiver.
If your transmitter is on channel 36 - 60, you'll need a High band receiver.

Your link is to a High band receiver.

As for the crystal, I strongly suggest you only use a crystal that's recommended by the manufacturer of the receiver. You cannot use just any old crystal you have laying round the house.

There are Single conversion crystals and Dual conversion crystals.

Your link is to a Single conversion receiver.

72.85MHz is indeed channel 53.

Here's a link to a chart of all the RC frequencies and the corresponding channel numbers:

It is illegal to use an Aircraft Frequecy.. ie 72MHZ with a surface vehicle .. ie Boat/Car. Surface vehicles use 75MHZ.
