Default Need advice on a motor, ESC and battery selection

As the subject line says, I need some advice. I bought anARF kit, a twin engine OV-10 Bronco, off ebay and need some advice.
The kit details:

Wing Span: 41.3 in /1050mm
Wing Area: 341 sq in /22 sq dm
Flying Weight: 2.6 lbs/1200 g
Fuselage Length: 41.7in /1060mm

Calls for:
Motor System: Outrunner Brushless motor: 2pcs400T
Battery: 11.1v 1200mah Li-poly 2pcs
Brushless Speed controller: 15-18A

Any suggestions on motor, ESC and battery selection.

Default RE: Need advice on a motor, ESC and battery selection

I'm VERY new to electric powering airplanes but have learned a lot along the way. I'm of the faith that if something is simple and easy to use, cost is not a factor. I tried going with inexpensive on the ESC and battery only to wind up giving the ESC away (never got it to work) and the battery burned a hole in my floor.

So I'll give you what little advice I can from my novice perspective.

I use nothing but E-flite ESCs with BEC (battery elimiator circuit). They work from the very second you plug them in (pre-progammmed and you can re-program them if you want to) and the price isn't that bad either. As for batteries, it've used both E-fllie 12502S 7.4 VDC ones and EVO (from Tower Hobbies) 42503S 11.1 VDC ones with great sucess.

In your case, I'd get the E-flite 450 http://www.horizonhobby.com/Products...rodID=EFLM1400 with a E-flite 20 amp ESC/BEC http://www.horizonhobby.com/Products...rodID=EFLA311B

Selecting LiPo batteries is very difficult IMHO. Like I said, don't go cheap as you get what you pay for. I'd advise going with a brand name like E-flite, EVO or Thunder Power even thought they cost more. Here is one example of a E-fligte 1250 mAh 2S battery: http://www.horizonhobby.com/Products...dID=EFLB12502S Here is a Flight Power EVO 1345 mAh 2S battery: http://www3.towerhobbies.com/cgi-bin...&I=LXRVR1&P=SM

Remember, you can put a bigger ESC in and not hurt a thing. A little bigger motor won't hurt anything either just don't go crazy with it though. And finally, a bigger battery won't hurt a thing BUT the bigger the battery the more it will weight which is NOT what you want to do to an aircraft (add weight).

You'll also need a good charger. I bought the MRC Super Brain 989 and like it so far. It has a couple of quirks (like discharging and charging the batteries unless you just charge them) but otherwise a very safe and good charger. MAKE SURE THAT YOU GET A CHARGER BAG FOR THE LiPo BATTERIES! A local RC'er burned his house down because he left the battery unattended (very dumb) and didn't have it in a safety bag like this one: http://www3.towerhobbies.com/cgi-bin...?&P=8&I=LXSEA5

I also like the E-flite electrical connectors as they have the + and - signs on them, are almost impossible to connect backwards (ends are one round, one U shaped preventing them from being put togehter wrong), easy to solder and assemble, and are gold plated. IMHO, they are easier to work with than Deans connectors and cost slightly less than Deans.

Use as small and light a receiver that you can put into it too. Some of the new ones are about half the weight of the old stlye ones.

Thanks for the advice guys. Anybody ever heard of a brushless "400T"? I thought the 400 type motors were brushed.

I googled 400t brushless motor and found this one right away: http://www.raidentech.com/br400****rsc.html

No idea what kind of quality it is though. Personally, I'd get a E-flite 400 if it were me: http://www.horizonhobby.com/Products...rodID=EFLM1305

Go with DuceNova.

You will need:

- 2 E-flite Park 450 BL Outrunner 890 Kv Motors,

- 2 E-flite 25-Amp Pro Brushless ESC's,

- a single 3S 11.1V 2000–2200mAh Li-Po pack,

- your favorite receiver and Tx w/4-6 channel

There is other brands if you like just make sure you keep it in the same Specs.
There is brushed and brushless Inrunner Motor, but go with the outrunner brushless.
