Foamy Profile F6F Hellcat
Just started this last night for my newest indoor flyer. It's from Fun Foam Models Plans, drawn & designed by Howard Carpenter. 32" WS 22 1/2" Long. Foam Meat trays I was able to get from a local Grocery store worked great, 3/16" thick. Planning on using GWS Pico gear, both servos & receiver. Power to be a GWS S1 IPS system with Kokam 340 2S lithium pack.

Added a 1.5mm (.055) Carbon fiber spar @ 2" from the LE (Hopefully thats where it should balance, no CG given on the plans so I went 30% 'ish from the LE) Tail surfaces all hinged in place. Tail seems kind of wobbly side to side aft of the TE, might have to anchor it to the wing with Fishing line. Time to find out where that radio gear will go, mount the motor stick, and get it ready for paint. So far all up weight of the bare air frame is 1.5oz. Weighed all the radio gear and it looks as if I'll be in 5-6oz range.

Getting it ready for paint, realized I should probably add some hard points for the fishing line to run through for stiffening the tail, made them from 1/64" ply:

Some of you may be looking at the pics and saying, "What Dihedral?" Good point. I was going on the the thought that there is still enough flex in the wing even with the CF spar that I would have "in flight Dihedral" ala Tiger Moth.
I added another Hard point on the spar line to run some line to the wingtips were I left a little spar material sticking out to tie to, going with this for the first flight:

Been mulling over schemes for this bird (I like scale, even for the little ones) I think I'm going with Early Blue Angels, Circa 1946. In fact, these were the first planes the Blue Angels flew, less than a year then they switched to F8F Bearcats. Solid insignia blue with simple "US NAVY" on the fuse and Plane # on the tail:

I was kinda busy last night
Total weight is 5.2 oz., the paint only added .2 oz to the bare airframe. Pushrods are .032 wire on the ends and heatshrunk to the CF between. Had to move the battery further forward, our estimated CG was wrong (or at least the #'s showed). 1 3/4" - 1 7/8" from the LE should about do it, flight test will confirm. Hope to get a calm day (or at least one without snow!) to get a handle on it before I fly it indoors @ [link=http://www.gregcovey.com/rit_indoor.htm]RIT March 19th[/link]

It flies!! Had a chance to put it to the test indoors on Sat @ [link=http://www.gregcovey.com/rit_indoor.htm]RIT[/link]. CG Calculation was a litte off, wanted to come down like a rock with the power off (at least it was nose heavy and not the other way around!) Moved the CG from 1.875" to about 2.25" from the leading edge (just aft of the spar) and the power off glide is great, climbs like crazy under full power. A real nice plane for just plain 'ol flyin'!

Just finished the retro-fit to brushless. Put an E-Flite Park250 on it with a CC Phoenix 10 controller. going to try a 7x6 GWS slowfly prop first, then maybe an 8x3.8 APC slowfly.
Still using the old reliable Kokam 340 2-cell batteries, had to move it about an 1 1/2" further forward to get the balance, weight is 4.5 oz.
Going to give it a try at the Main Street Armory tomorrow.
February 10 - RCCR Indoor RC Flying at the Armory
900 E Main, Rochester NY
12:00PM - 5:00PM,
$10 pilot fee, 150ft by 200ft flying area, 50ft ceiling.
Weight limit: 12oz monoplane, 16oz biplane.
Dedicated sessions for 3D, slowfly, and helis.
Proof of current AMA Membership required.
