Default Shulman Aviation Fury F3A and Himax 210 power

Hi Guys,

Anyone run both the Fury F3A and the Himax 210? Is the Fury noticeably more powerful or is there not much discernible difference? Just curious as the Himax is supposed to be rated at 2500W while the Fury is 2600-3000...

Thanks,
Ken

Having run a bunch of the outrunners that are out there, I will admit that the HiMax has a ton of power. My issue with the HiMax has been that the throttle response is almost more 2 stroke like. It doesn't seem to have a good middle range. It feels much more off and on than most of the others. With a throttle curve it is better, but still has a strange feel to it. The Fury, as well as the rest also have plenty of power, but seem to have a much smoother throttle.

Thanks for the reply Arch... I was motivated to ask because I flew F-15 for the first time (outside the simulator) today, in some pretty stiff headwinds, and had an awfully tough time in one leg of the loop in the knife-edge golfball - heading back into the wind. I'm sure a lot of it had to do with my lack of experience with the sequence, but maybe partly equipment based as well (a somewhat old and abused pack). We'll see how things go as I continue to practice it.

Cheers,
Ken

Yea, I would definitely try newer packs. Most of the motors out there today have tons of power, more than we really need, but they are completely dependent on the quality of the packs. No different than bad fuel or gas in IC motors.

What ESC is recommended for the Fury motor ? On the website they don't recommend Castle, and the Fury ESC's only go up to 6s.
Thanks to Arch, now I notice the weak spot at mid throttle on my Himax.

Is it just me or dose the torque silver bullet F3A motor and the Fury F3A look very similar, even have the same mounting holes.

I know the Castle's will work fine with the Silver Bullet motors and should work fine with the Fury. I believe they are similar.

I have an OS speedo for the Silver Bullet so was hoping that the spec would be simulir so i can setup the timing etc. It’s a good starting point even if they are a different motor. No information comes with the Silver bullet which is a pain.

Sorry about that...lol. Apparently the new HiMax shouldn't have this issue and I've seen nothing but good on it so far.

Arch, I'm looking at that as a good thing, now I can work on a smoother transition.
From what I'm reading, the problem is the newer 28 pole motors are causing a problem with some ESC'c. If I get a Fury motor or a new Himax what would be the best ESC to use.

It is only certain motors with 28 poles that have an issue. I had great luck with my Castle controllers on my Vanquish. I have never tried the OS controllers. The Mezon series controllers are some of the nicest I have ever run.

Not exactly the same. The case is cosmetically different, and the Fury is 28 poles and 230 kv I know the Torque is 20 pole, but don't remember the kv.

The reason we don't recommend the Castle esc's is we've had 2 instances where the controller has burned up. I know Castle is working on (or finished) an update that will work better with 28 pole motors. Once the improvement has been made and shown to work with our motor (or 28 pole motors), we will add it back to our list with the confidence we had in it before. There are a few Fury's running with Castles with no problems, three even at my field (1 with the latest update, so I'll be keeping an eye on it in particular). I'm running an OS/Futaba esc as is another pilot at the field, and the Jeti's also work great with the Fury. I haven't seen a Fury with a Mezon, but I'm sure it would work just as well as any other Jeti.

Blake, set the SB up for 20 poles with a timing of 24 degrees.

Hi Jason.

Thanks for the Info. I will try that and see how it go's. Your 28 pole design looks to have the power preformances over the torque, judging by your video flying the Epic.
Beautiful model btw.

I'm running the OS (Futaba) controller. Works great!
