I guess it's one of those things that you have to understand the advantages of having them to appreciate them. Flying a knife edge cuban eight with only rudder input is a beautiful sight.

Best way are to design properly (if possible) to avoid these small canalizers. Take into consideration what speedr mention in his post. However, there is one thing to add to this and that is the airplane CL and CG distance in % that gives you the static stability.
The stab size Plays a vital role here to obtain damping and hence oscillation damped.
Look at what speed wrote because this should be sufficient to understand the problem.(This is a complex problem)
