Default 90 size conversion - components needed?

my father and I are trying to gather info on what components and batteries are needed for a 90 size conversion. the plane in question is a CA epsilon still in kit form. two items to consider, my father would really llike to use an outrunner motor instead of a gearbox set-up. and another is the components will be used only for this 90 size plane, ie. he will not be jumping to a 2 meter and trying to use the same packs, controller, etc.

so, can anyone post some thoughts or experiences on giving a 90 size pattern conversion a serious go?

thanks

Hubb

I´m about to start the same conversion myself. I will be using an Actro 24-6 or 32-5, Jeti Advance 77 Opto Plus, 8s batteries (probably Flightpower Evo 3700 mAh) and something like a 16x10 APC-E prop. If I can´t get the CG far enough forward with the light 24-6 motor, I will use the 32-5 which is a bit bigger. But CG should be doable with the lighter motor as well I think, but if you want a bit of of headroom, go for the 32-5 right away.

Actro and Plettenberg are pretty much the highest quality motors there is and are priced a bit higher than most, but worth every penny. If you´re looking for cheaper options, let us know. A suitable motor from Plettenberg would be the Xtra 25-12. A bit bigger than the Actro 32-5 and can handle a bit more power, but a plane like the Epsilon will have superb power with the Actro setup. The Xtra 25 series (although the lower revving 25-13) is what people use in light 2 meter airframes, so it feels a bit overkill to me.

Edit: I just checked Hobby Lobby and the price for the Actro 32-5 along with the Jeti 77 Opto Plus controller (package deal) is $479. http://www.hobby-lobby.com/actro-32.htm

I will also convert the Epsilo, my firs idea was using the actro 32-5, 8s Lipo 16x10 or 16x13" prop, i have used this setup before with good performance .

27v
17x10" prop
65A
7000rpm

But the chance to test a new motor arived so i will try a Causmann 430/25/ 20w 14p, 8s 16x10" prop to start.

Another interesting motor to consider is the Hyperion Z4045 series outrunners seen [link=http://www.allerc.com/product_info.php?cPath=7_76_77&products_id=1917]here[/link].

They are designed for up to a 4 stroke 140 replacement. Anyone else think this might be a candidate? The pricing and quality apparent in the design certainly are attractive.

I have begun contemplating perhaps doing my NIB Excelleron 90 with this motor instead of a piped 2 stroke .90 glow engine. I have a Jeti 77 OPTO and an 8S2P pack already...I haven't run any numbers through Motocalc but it looks to be an intriguing possibility.

Interesting conversion Hubb.
Nearly bought the same plane early this summer for conversion but suddenly a 2x2m were on my hobbyroom instead (Propably something the cat brought in...) Planned to use an Actro 32-5 in the Epsilon on 8S4000 (already bought), but ordered an Actro 40-5 for the bigger bird instead. Waiting for matched FP EVO 5S5000 x 2 for it ... Jeti ESC.
My reason for Actro: The most experienced electro-dealer in Norway said it is among the best ones. And in addition I have read a lot of tests, also Joacim`s careful tests which claimed these motors run quite cool. So far I have not ran mine on 10S, but some 8S-testing tells me I won`t be disappointed. If not Actro I would have chosen Plettenberg...

Since the plane is kit yet then you should begin to remove weight, drilling holes and so. Look for unneccesary heavy balsa and make new parts if there are no-good things there. Have not built CA-kits so far myself, but have heard rumors some parts can be replaced/remade to save weight.

I have tried some of the Hyperion`s and except from some cogging on the smaller ones they have worked fine. Especially the 3025`s ran very balanced and strong. Found some ampere-deviation between some equals, but not too much. The 40-serie is new to me, happy if any one can tell if they are pleased with these. Then a 4045 could be a cheaper choise.
