Default Lipo Query - Any one help??

I have a sebart Angel 50 running on 6s Lipos (Flightpower and Rhino packs), plane etc performs superb but when I charge the packs using my Graupner 16 with internal balancer cell 4 is always reads about 20 milli volts above all the other cells, this has the effect that the charger won't automatically stop, can anyone shed any light on why this might be happening or suggest any solutions ?? Will it damage the battery packs?

Thanks in Advance

Nick

Get a good DVM and compare the cell voltages without the charger attached. It could very well be the charger balancer circuitry is not accurate or has drifted. If the DVM says all the cells are the same, the charger is in error. If the DVM agrees with the charger as far as the delta between cells, then the cells are unbalanced.

The DVM and the charger will not necessarily report the same voltage (it will be close) but what you are interested in is the delta between the cells reported by the DVM. The charger should report the same delta. If not, the charger is out of calibration.

I have done a few checks with a DVM and each cell voltage is the same as the voltage indicated by the balancer so it looks like the cells are out of balance. Strange though, its cell 4 on each pack and 2 different make of packs. I have a stand alone balancer, I will try balancing the batteries on this and see if it can balance them.

Thanks

If you have multiple packs with the same cell 'off' in all of them, that is suspicious. I would balance the cells manually (monitoring them of course) and then charge without an inline balancer and see how the cells behave.....

Woodie ... manually balance means discharge the cell to a certain level?

It means to make sure all cells are same voltage. Discharge the high cell(s) to match the lowest.

Odd for sure,........

FMA Cellpro 10S,..takes care of your batteries like nothing else will. I'm Running TRUE-RC 5S-5000(10S) Pletty 30-10 EVO, Jetti 91 and super happy! I just ordered 4900 Rhino's and another Cellpro 10S charger.
