Converting Sbach 342 to electric
I am about to convert a Pilot RC Sbach 342 to electric. Anticipated flying weight is 11.5 lbs with 10s pack. What motor / esc / prop would you guys suggest. I want to run 10s as I already have packs. The reason I am asking on the pattern thread is that the airframe size and weight are fairly close to F3A (73" span) I am looking for good aerobatic performance though not as demanding as F3A.

RE: Converting Sbach 342 to electric
Hi John,
I recently assembled and flew a Sebart Katana that is similar in size and weight. I'm using it as a "test bed" for motors and esc's. So far I have tried a Himax and a Plettenberg with the Castle ICE 80 HV and both worked very well on a 21 x 14 prop. I don't own so haven't tried yet a 22 x 12, but I'll order one today and let you know how it goes. Happily I think you have lots of motors to choose from: Hacker A60-16M, AXI 5130, Himax, Scorpion F3A, Plettenberg 30-10 or 25-12, or even a Turnigy. Of course for solid performance and cost it's hard to beat the Hacker or the Himax.
Hope you'll post some pictures of the finished product!

RE: Converting Sbach 342 to electric
I have a pilot 30cc Sbach on order
I'm going to use the Hyperion Zs4045-12 and the CC 110HV on 10S. (Mejlik 20x12E)
Here's some estimated numbers from the Hyperion site for the new ZS4045-12
http://media.hyperion.hk/dn/zs/ZS40propdata.pdf
Prop Cells V V/Cell A W RPM
APC 19×8E 10 34.00 3.40 65.5 2230 7350
APC 19×10E 10 33.40 3.34 75.0 2506 7005
APC 19×12E 10 34.28 3.43 92.4 3168 6870
APC 20×10E 10 34.04 3.40 80.3 2733 7050
APC 20×13E 10 33.30 3.33 93.4 3113 6510
So i'm expecting 2500-3000W

RE: Converting Sbach 342 to electric
Guys
Thanks for the info. I have been considering the Scorpion S5525-225kv which is showing max 78amps with the APC 20/12E with 8.2 kg thrust. Anyone have experience of this motor?

RE: Converting Sbach 342 to electric
Guys
Flew the Sbach 342 for the first time yesterday. First change in plan was the model, I ended up with the Slipstream version as my dealer could not get the PilotRC version in reasonable time. Very nice kit, light and well put together, good hardware. The conversion was simple, I glued / screwed 1/8" ply extensions to the sides of the motor box to get the correct relationship of the motor to the cowl and glued a 1/4" ply plate between the side plates with some triangle stock to strengthen the joint. The battery went into the tank poition with no modifications, adjutment of the battery set the CG with no added weight.
After some deliberation I decided to go with an 8S 5000 20C set up and the Hyperion 4035-12 motor and 100amp Hyperion OPTO ESC / APC18x10E prop . The combination works very well and flew the Sbach with great authority at 11lbs flying weight. I think 10S would have been overkill for me but you power hungry F3A flyers may disagree! Will try to p[ost some shots of the conversion next week.

RE: Converting Sbach 342 to electric
Okay
As promised here are a few shots of the motor / ESC / battery install in the Sbach. As previously described a very easy conversion to electric, with the 2200 Mah Nimh mounted on the side of the motor box no additional weight was needed to balance on the reccomended CG.
Initial tests showed the Hyperion 4035-12 / APC 18x10E drawing 90amps / 2800W which explains the lively performance, I have reduced the throttle travel to bring this down to 74amps / 2300W and will air test today, should be plenty to fly this 11lb model.

RE: Converting Sbach 342 to electric
Guys
Have now got around 20 flights on the Sbach. It flies very well on this setup with plenty of power at a max draw of 74 amps / 2300W. Have tried a couple of props but still like the 18x10APCe best. 7 minute flight uses around 2800mah so still room to stretch the flight time further.

RE: Converting Sbach 342 to electric
Saw your thread on your Sbach. I've done the same as you and converted mine to electric. What thrust angles do you run as i'm trying to get mine sorted.
