Tony wasn't Dave's schemes the same top and bottom? That's who I remember having the big checkerboard first, looks great in the air, great contrast from the typical colorful top scheme on most planes.

No Dave's models had the checkerboard on the top of the wing and stab, then some angles on the bottom. I wish I had a pic of the bottom.

I owned a Phoenix 6 I got from Dave that I flew in the 1978 Nats in what was then Masters, now F3A. I also had a Phoenix 8 in the scheme except it was red instead of the metallic brown Dave used. The actual story is that Dave Scully came up with the scheme and Dave copied it.

Daves scheme was really cool when i started competeing 30 some years ago. I thought it was checked both top and bottom jus oppsite. Of course it could just be my memory and tony is correct. Either way the colors were the same as back then. there were not many manuvers back then that caused a great deal of confusion likewe exmpmerience today. I think the big goals were engine and radio reliability. Then came orientation.

Well today was the day. Ken V. test flew the first Cation in the US. It was actually the second production plane and other then a couple little issues it went together nice. I brought this plane up to show at the WC's and Nats and it ended going home with Ken.

As most of you know he and Dave have flown the Bravos for quiet a while and are really familiar with composite wings built light. I really looked at those when I started this project and I think we are pretty close right out of the gate. Ken is using the Q80 and Zippys I think a long with an APC prop. He said it flew really nice and is just a touch nose heavy. I think a prop change will be the fix.

This is all the info I have tonight but I am sure Ken will jump in when he gets a minute or two.

My Cation should be along shortly.
Can folks advise me as to what hardware I'll need to complete the CAModels ARF? Not sure what will come with it.
Wheels? Axles? Tailwheel?
Control horns? Pushrods? pull-pull hardware?
Hatch latch?

Well, at long last my Contra/Neu powered Cation flies! I'll just post comments on flight characteristics here, since Chip's design will be produced by SebArt at some time in the future.

5 flights in calm conditions so far. My general impressions:
- Slow (a positive for me)! Not sure how much is due to plane vs Contra. No tendency to wallow out of pulls like my prior electrics if I don't keep the speed up. Gave me the impression of light wing loading.
- Drive felt like a tractor. Didn't take much stick to pull the plane along. Kind of like a draggy, over-powered IMAC plane (forgive the comparison in a pattern forum:))
- I kept moving the CG forward throughout the day. Plane felt graceful, but not locked-in(if that makes sense). Perhaps Contra planes all like a forward CG? Didn't feel like the yaw instability others have described.
- A P13 sequence of moderate size, no wind, light on the "throttle", and no messing around took about 6min and only 2700mah. Energy drain should be OK.
- Snaps were very nice - not needing excessive control throws.

I've swapped the LG to a taller one to get more than an inch prop clearance.
Snowing like crazy now - no flying this weekend[:o]
