Cation Sneak Peak
 

This is a new plane I have been working on with a good friend here in AR. It started out as a plane Mariano built only for himself. He is a incredible craftsman and super intelligent when it comes to designing planes with Auto CAD. I was able to see and fly the proto-type a few months ago and was very impressed buy the slow downline speeds. You will see why in some later posts. Anyway he made the original mold very light to just make one or two planes. I asked him if we could work together to further develope this plane and he agreed.

This will be the first all composite pattern plane that I know of from AR. We have the first wings and stabs now and they are really nice. The weights are absolutely no problems. This is just a sneak peak and I will update more as time nears the release. If all goes well we are easily inside the one month mark so keep checking back.

Oh yeah and by the way it is pronounced (Ka-ti-on) and means positively charged atom.

WOW!!!!!! I like that Chip! I am building an Opium right now and I love the forward canopy! I think it is a really good thing.

I really like the look of the fuse! Hope the price is right. Just may end up with one!

OK guys here it is. I know a quite a few of you have been ëmailing about the status of the Cation. I am sorry it took longer then expected to get this project ready for production, but it has a lot of new production tech. that came with it. As I mentioned before it will be an all composite plane, well almost (the rudder is built up). We have been flying a proto type here in Ar. for the past 3 months tweaking and fine tuning.

As I mentioned before I was very impressed with the slow downline speeds even with an outrunner. The reason for this is the shape of the fuse itself. You will be able to see what I am talking about when you see the top view photo. It is actually an airfoil and it is very wide back in the fin area.

Mariano, Marcelo, and myself have been working very hard to get everything ready for this plane so there will not be any signifigant delays once it is made available for sale. Our goal was to make this a less expensive airplane then the Visa and De Ja Vu´s, however it is very difficult and these are the reasons why. Even though it is an all composite wing and stab the cost just kept adding up to get it lite. It is very easy to make a wing that is 410 garms ea. and a stab that is 120 grams each (white unfinished) for very little money. However where we have ended up is wings (per panel) 370 grams (6 colors and clear) and the stabs at an amazing 104 grams each finished.

I am not sure of the exact price for the Cation however it will be less then the other planes. I am thinking someplace in the neighborhood of $3000.00.

Once again I cannot thank Mariano enough for all his help down here to develope this new wing, stab (For that matter the Cation in general) and for having faith in myself as far as bringing this plane to market. Hope you guys like the pics and I am sorry a couple are a little fuzzy. The only thing missing from the plane is the SFG´s.

As with all the planes there is a kit version. Since it is all composite the kit will be more expensive then a balsa, foam wing plane. I am not sure of the price but I am guessing someplace around $2000.00 for an all white plane.

That plane is sharp Chip. I love the shape of the wings and stabs. Very sexy looking plane and your finishes are something to behold.

Well today was finally the day. Mariano and i went to fly the cation. All i can say is wow. The ony mix i programmed was 2 percent down elev to throttle and set a snap and stall turn cond
ition. The weight without battery is 3630 grams. It is all composite stab as well. I do not have the pics with me at this moment maybe mariano will post some tonight.

It is true the plane looks very sleak but trust me it is not. The fuse is very wide from the trailing edge of the wing back especiially the fin and stab. The prototype called austral really impressed me with its down line speeds. It had a totally different wing stab configuration causing some other problems but i knew mariano was on to something with the fuse.

We designed the new wing and stab together and the took all the things learned from the genesis to the de ja vu and applied them accordingly. Mariano did all the cad work for us for the wing and then designed the stab himself for the cation.

To be honest i really wasnt thrilled with the swept elev hinge line but went along with it thinking it should be ok seeing as how the elev should only need to move equal amounts to work correct.

I set it up like any plane 1 dgree positive on the wing and the stab .5 neg. I knew when it took off that was what it needed but i did not expect the elev to feel so smooth and solid. It is incredible. After coming home and thinking about i believe thhe swept hinge line is similiar to built in expo. I remembered my old conquests with the swept fin post and how smooth the rudder was. Granted on rudder it is not ideal but maybe it is an advantage on elev where mechanical and electrical advantange is so important.

Anyway i really want to thank daniel falco for the molds and hard work Sergio Testa for the help with the plugs Marcelo for the laser cutting and especially Mariano for his ability to draw in cad what we talked about in broken english and spainish.

last but not least we are offering the first 5 planes at a very special price. this only because of the fact it took several months longer then exspected to finish this project and i want to help our composite guy re coupe his investment. as you all know money is tight especially here. please im me or email me for the details and i assure you you will be glad you did

Norbi of course i would never leave you out. I had a paragraph explaining how this sucsess would not be possible without your super clean installations. The problem is i am on mirys phone and iit is all in spanish. Mariano was emailing me pics to upload and icould not figure out how to save them to the phone. Miry wanted to go eat so i changed the settings to english. That was a huge mistake. So i have spent the last 2 hours trying to get back to where i was. Finally i did but still no luck with pics. Not to mention i am now downstairs with the dog lol.


Anyway to make a long story short norberto is a good friend here in argentina and quite possibly the cleanest guy i have ever seen when it come to rigging f3a planes. Actually any planes. Many of you guys are currently flying his work. He reliable and is the only guy i trust 100 percent to rig my planes. By argentine standards some people say he is exspensive but by the worlds standards for a complete installation on a arc model i think he is very reasonable. 300 to 350 dollars is what he charges to completely turn your arf into a truely ready to fly model. I am sure ney pete andrew and other can testify to his work.

Today mariano picked up the cation and all we did was program the tx and plug in the batts before we flew.

It was pretty cool considering all the linkages were done with no tx

Hi Chip,
Could you comment on it's snap and spin entry characteristics? I was wondering how the semi-elliptical wing would affect snaps/stalls.
Does it feel/behave any differently in KE loops?

Sorry for the deleyed reponse but ii was out of town. Here is my opinoun on the wing. As for snaps and spins it is equal to or better then anything i have flown. In high winds or turbulance it is for sure better.

Now when it comes to production it is far superior. Epoxy carbon fiber and fiberglass are all very consistant. Not to mention the llaser cut parts. Sure there will be a few grams difference in the wings but noting when it comes to airfoils leading shapes etc.

I do. Not no if any of you guys watch Deadist Catch on tv but this is like betting all on the last 25 pods. we have tested this wing for several months and i know in my heart its better not a gimic

Btw the knife edge loops are only rudder and throttle. No mix. I have not tried one myself but watched as sergio and mariono did serveral. Both are great pilots mariano new to pattern and sergio hasnt flown for 10 years.

To me this was the real test. Marcelo and i. Can fly through stuff due to many years of practice. Not to take anything. Away from mariano and sergio but it felt great to watch them both fly. Espesially sergio he switched to jets several years ago and now i think we may see him again in f3a. Incredible talent.

lol. I just did mine in the same scheme. Different colors though. haha It's either this, or the diamond like you do it Chip that is really visible to me. I'm having a hard time coming up with a paint scheme. Which you cats are obviously having no problems with. Your stuff is the nicest that I have seen! I could never have that kind of imagination to paint like that!

I really like the look of this plane!

Nice to see so many different designs come out of CA Models so fast!
