Default Tomahawk ViperJet

Anyone else got one of these? I must say I am impressed with it, bit expensive at £139.00 for a bare airframe, but as I had all the spare gear out of my ex Habu it seemed a shame to waste the gear, the die cutting was the best I have seen for the formers, but a bit of modding needed to fit the fan.

Having now flown it a lot, it requires no mixing for knife edge or for anything else for that matter, it tucks ever so slightly to the canopy in knife edge, but I think that is a C of G issue, the 3000Mah batteries I am using are a bit long for the installed battery tray, I will need to cut this out and reposition the velcro to move it back a bit and see if that gets rid of the small amount of tucking.

Most of the guys at my field say the Viper is faster than the Habu, I am not sure I think its the Viper is smaller and I keep it closer in so it may seem faster, but one thing is certain its a lot better flying than the Habu by a long way.

Nice looking bird kind of reminds me of an alpha jet. What were your compaints with the Habu? I'm interested because the Habu is one that I'm considering for my next EDF.

The Habu needs opposite aileron to rudder to keep it in knife edge, its much heavier than the Viper and bigger, so slower and not as nimble, its also difficult to see on a not too perfect day being all grey it blends in with the normal UK winter sky, that's why the Viper has the yellow underside, it comes in all white.

This EDF is rapidly becoming my favorite foamy, always comes to the field with me and is great fun to fly, if anyone else has one out there, or any other type of foam EDF jet let us know how you launch it?

Myself I launch by holding onto the wingtip at my side and applying full throttle as the bird gets to about half way between verticle and horizontal I give it a bit of acceleration and launch it at about 15 degs up, bit like a HLDG without the turn.

Man...I looked at some of the Jets on Tomahawk Model. Gawd, they're huge! I'm much more likely to buy a car! I like this EDF Viper Jet you have. Some seriously nice possibility of high thrust to weight ratio. Now, what are the airfoils? How thin?

Image is that of my first EDF the Sapac Saab JAS-39 Gripen. As is indicated, it modifies to a 90mm easily, and I added electracts.

The ViperJet has a nice fairly thin wing section, so no massive drag to contend with, flew it again eight times yesterday and its still one of my favorites, good turn of speed and just wonderful knife edge's from one end of the field to the other.

Mike,

What mods did you need to do to get the E-flite fan to fit? I'm considering one for my Habu gear if it's a straightforward fix.

Is it easy to hand launch? The one video I have seen looks much easier than launching the Habu.

To get the fan to fit you need to open up the recess a little so that it fits flat without a step to the inlet, other than the extra servo for the second side of the elevator everything else fits OK from the Habu, but have you seen the "Centry UK" Vortex, have a look on their web site, DW is flying it and seems quite pleased with it.

I hand launch like a discus launch glider from the wing tip at full power without the turn, just hold the wing by the tip and rotate it up and level, its very easy.

In the UK Al's Hobbies are the only people, look for your local "Tomahawk" supplier?

I have now been flying this model every week end near enough since I got it and it still generates a big smile out of me every time I fly it, I have also bought a Vortex and its sitting on the bench unloved no where near as much fun.

If you want an off the shelf EDF Foamy to put your Habu gear into this is the one, don't buy another Habu its not even near the amount of fun you can have with the Viperjet.
