RE: Where to buy ducted fans
First full-power bench test today. See attached images for results of the test.
Here's a youtube link tothe video Ijust happened to take.I used my radio tocontrol it so Icouldstep outside the room, you know in the eventsomething went wrong.Honestly Iwas expecting it to fly apart, not catch on fire.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=R-HCsv4Sy6o
Can anybody tell fromthe videoif the problem was poor airflow or a component mismatch? It kind of looks like the battery lead came loose first(possibly from heat) and then started arcing.
EDITED...while looking at the manual for the ESC I noticed an obscure warning about having it in the proper timing mode for larger motors to prevent the ESC from burning up. Why they don't just assume that a 100A ESC will ONLY be used with larger motors is beyond me, but perhaps that's what I get for purchasing my parts from another country. New ESC is on order. We'll try it again in a few days.

I had a feeling it was battery size. I giggle every time I shower.
Aren't "they" making them smaller, lighter and with the same Zip!
One would think?

RE: Where to buy ducted fans
you don't understand, 10S 5Ah!! 42V (when fully charged), 90C discharge rate, that's 450 amps, and 10C charge rate. HEY, ANYBODY KNOW WHERE I CAN FIND A 50A BATTERY CHARGER?!
Let's see, 42*450=19kW. There's more power in this battery than in most car batteries (12*500=6kW, yea)....and with about 1/3rd the size and weight......actually thatgives me an idea. But for RC this is enormous.

You dont expect the chinglish instructions to be clear do you? From experience with instructions, big motors to me = outrunners, and you need to get the timing right or the outrunner wont run properly, will likely pole and can cook the esc.
Why would you assume a 100A esc is ONLY used for large motors? We use 100A ESC's on 28mm inrunners pulling 90+ amps in 70mm fans.
Looking at the video I would guess you just overamped it and as is typical with many hk products the thermal cutout either didnt work/isnt there or the amp draw was way over the ESC ratings so it couldnt react in time and shut down.Cooked from the high current.
The motor sounded smooth at WOT so the esc wasnt stuttering or having trouble keeping up, most likely amp draw which is why we have meters and view them while spooling up, if the amps climb too high during a slow ramp up of the throttle you stop.

RE: Where to buy ducted fans
Hoping the T600 motors I ordered off ebay will get here soon so I can set up my two 127mm fans.
I haven't decided on the ESC's yet.
I went with 1,100kv motors. Going to run them on 6S

RE: Where to buy ducted fans
Looking back I probably should have gone withan 1100kV or even 1000kV motor. Now if I can just keep things from spontaneously combusting Imight be able to confirm my suspicions.
Ipromise to post actual performance data as soon as I can!

RE: Where to buy ducted fans
Most 120mm fans run on 750-800Kv on 10 cells, and a small increase in Kv equates to a big increase in amp draw due to the high load of the big rotor.
Low voltage setups for this size of fan is a backwards step, running them below 10s is going to result in huge amp draw to get any sort of power out of them, this has been done before, a good 90mm fan makes as much power as a poorly set up 120mm fan.

RE: Where to buy ducted fans
These cheap 1,100kv motors are probably 880kv or 1,500kv who knows? They are rated to 7S though.
The 880kv ones strangely can't handle as much power as the 1,100kv ones going by the specs.
We'll see in testing how the 1,100kv ones do with the 127mm fans.
I think my motors are down at the post office. I'll pick up the box today and see if it's them.

I like the looks of this Inrunner but worry about heat build up since this thing has no built in cooling like the heli motors do.

They have been tested a year ago and cook quite well in the larger fans. Waste of time and money.
Doesnt matter if the motors rated to 12s, its the amount of amps the windings can take that is the issue. The higher Kv motor will always have a higher amp rating as it uses less windings than the lower Kv motor. Doesnt mean its a better choice, overloading the fan with too high a Kv will simply result in huge amp draws and a low efficiency with lots of wasted watts that will cook the motor.

RE: Where to buy ducted fans
Reading the reviews on the one I was looking at didn't look to good. Now I thinking about trying out one of those new Red Brick ones.
I found this web page where a guy has been messing around with this stuff.

You know harralk your video would have been much more entertaining for us if you used a $400 Castle ESC to burn rather than a $80 Hobby King one.

RE: Where to buy ducted fans
Checking the fit of the motor to the fan I see that there would be some rubbing. Sigh, yet another need for me to buy a lathe.
I'll need to take out .03125 in clearance around this motor like this guy did.

RE: Where to buy ducted fans
OK so it's better to run a 5" fan at 10s with a 800kv motor at 19,000 rpm than a 1100kv motor on 6s at 19,000rpm.
What happens in the air when these things unload?
Will the 6s one still be using over 100 amps or will it level off closer to where the 10s system would be?

RE: Where to buy ducted fans
How much static current does the 6S pull?
Have you decided what you're going to put the 5" fans in yet?
How are you running your wires with the outrunners?
I picked up my new ESC this morning and have it ready to go. Stay tuned for another exciting video.....and possibly some definitive performance data.
