I know less than nothing about electric, let alone EDFs so bear with me…
It is my understanding that a single fan is more efficient than multiple fans would be, however if I wanted 4 smaller fans instead of 1 or 2 bigger fans how well would this work? It would be about a 5 pound model.

Typically, the only time you want to use multiple DFs is to keep it scale. There are exceptions where you can use two DFs and still keep things scale. An example is using a DF on each air intake and then "Y" couple them together in a single exhaust. In this manner, the two DFs add together for a greater combined output.
