Question EDF inlet ring - value?

Looking at a new build and found my CG was a bit tail heavy. I have a E-flite 69MM EDF with the molded inlet ring installed. To get the CG more forward I need to move the EDF as far forward as possible. The inlet ring takes up about 1/2" in front of the fan. The unit is mounted in back of the wing about 2 inches back of the trailing edge (profile fuse). It would help if I can bring the unit up as close to the trailing edge as possible.

The question is can I eliminate the inlet ring and still have decent performance from the EDF?

The short answer is no. Many tests have shown aprox. 33% reduction in thrust without the ring ... Sorry, but you need it.

Greg,
Thanks for the input. What are you thoughts on an exhaust tube with the outlet reduce to 95% of the open fan area?

Probably good - but there are folks who are very familiar with the combination you are using - and they would be a MUCH better source of information than I am. Two options would be bench testing it with a Watt-meter and thrust guage or just flight testing it and playing with your exhaust area.
Hopefully someone will chime in with hard info.
