Default help with set up for first elec

ok this is what i have for the GWS A-10 with the 50's motors
GWS ICS-480E/F Electronic Speed Control
8.4V 1600mAh AA NiMH battery by GWS.
6-cell 400mAh NiCD battery pack
GWS R4PII/F Pico 4ch RX Standard Vertical Pin.
GWS PICO STD servo
Futaba 6EXA Super 6 channel FM Computer Radio System

I know the radio is a over kill for the A-10 but I really got it for all my planes. Now is is my first elec. and I am not sure if i got the right speed controller for the 50's but i know already that i am going to get the 55's. I thought that i could use it now and maybe grow a little bit with it. Please help

Chris

You will get a considerable weight reduction, plus extended flight times by switching to Lipoly batteries. Weight (or lack of it) is the key to success with any electric powered model.
Other than that, unless you go to brushless motors to power the fans, the ESC should be just fine.

Sounds good - BUT don't even think of trying to fly it with the 6 cell 400mah battery.

Well I will send that 6 cell back as soon as it gets here. Is there a better NiMH battery to use around $30?

Thanks guys for your help

Dude!

You are going to love E-flight. Tons of variables, props, batts, motors - etc.

The a-10 is cool, but will not be a spectactular performer. Those little fans can hardly make thrust! It will fly if you save weight. I think you should go with around 600-900 mA cells.

Reasoning- You must be able to have the right "C" rating. that is the safe discharge rate for any given battery. If your "C" is say 10 - then you can discharge at a max of 10x400mA=4Amps. You have 2 motors, each drawing close to that!
Your pack is light enough, but not beefy enough!

Other pack - too big. If it is also 10 C rated (likely for nimh) you can provide 15 A continuous, great! - but too heavy. It could work in many propeller driven planes, because you could tweak props, but I don't think there are as many options for choosing fan pitch.

Ducted electrics are cool, but are very underpowered compared to most model planes. It will almost be like a real airplane - no vertical, no save your butt power, less room for mistakes.

Good luck!
