Default Hobby Lobby V Diamond

Anyone pick up a Hobby Lobby V Diamond yet? I'm wanting a delta wing that can get going really fast (100+ mph or 120+mph) and I thought about the Parkzone Stryker. I may still go brushless in one but it won't be a speed . I think it needs way too many mods to get it up and going pretty fast. So, I was going to check out the V Diamond from Hobby Lobby. It already seems to be just what I want. I'm wanting to go with retracts or belly land it, but I'm not sure if I even want one yet.

Me being the Moto Calc genius that I am, I couldn't figure out how to make it show me a really good motor for this. What "dry" weight for moto calc would be the best for this plane? (No motor, ESC, or battery in it)

I'm wanting a Mega...because I think those are the best for going really fast, but I can be swayed to something else. I really want to hit 120mph for Christmas, so what are some good motors I could throw in this? Instead of 1 HS-55 for airlerons, I thought about putting in an HS-81 or HS-81MG to help give it enough torque for both of the ailerons. (It doens't have enough room inside it for dual servos[])

All thoughts and opinions are welcome![8D]

I have one of these. There is a large thread on it at RCG. Here is a link...http://www.rcgroups.com/forums/showt...t=512948&pp=50

I have a Mega 16-25-3 on mine with a 6X5.5 prop. I don't have any way to check the speed but I can tell you it is WAY FASTER than any Stryker I have built. I have built about 6 Strykers and they are nice flyers but there flat bottom wing holds it back form 100+ speeds. Here are some videos of my V-Diamond.

Look me up at RCG or Wattflyer if you have any questions. I don't get on RCU that often. On the other sites I have the same screen name but dummie is spelled dummy.

Hehe I was wondering if you might visit RCU some time. It looks like RCG is the only place with a thread for the V. I was asking here to get some variety on the comments.

I don't visit this site very often. However I will be here more often due to the fact that my work won't let me go to RCG or Wattflyer. They have internet filters that restrict access to message boards. It's strange that I can get on here. I just startted this job, at my last job I could get to the other sites but not RCU and it is the opposit here at the new job. Hummm. For some reason my log in wouldnt work so I changed my name, I added and [S] to dummy and created a new log in.

I had one, until yesterday.

Did 'lawn dart' rekitting of it yesterday, during its maiden flight. I stalled it a bit after
takeoff, while attempting to get time to adjust the trims. The airplane was wanting to
roll left. The control surfaces were properly centered with the sticks neutral before
takeoff. The CG was where it was supposed to be. Note that the C/G range is very
narrow. It went nose first into the ground. It's now in my trash can.

Hmm. One thing I hadn't checked before flying it was the lateral (left right) balance.
Didn't consider that one wing may have been heavier than the other. You should
check yours before flying it.

May have trashed my LiPo. It drove the balancing connector into the end of the battery,
and broke the plastic on the balancing connector.

I'm a beginning RC pilot. Been flying my Hobbistar .60 trainer solo, for a couple of weeks
now. Had many flights on my ModelAero Aerocat. Had assumed that this V Diamond would
fly like it does, but it does not.

I'll say that my Aerocat Depron cat, from

http://www.modelaero.com/Merchant5/merchant.mvc?

gave me a lot more flights and enjoyment before it was retired. I'm going to
build another Aerocat...

I used Hobby Lobby's exact setup recommendations and had my moter keep cutting off in flight. I just too it into my LHS and they showed that with the HL recommended 8x8E prop I was pulling over 20 amps! The ESC is only 18amps and the motor is only for 6 - 12 amps!
The simple solution was to go to a 7x5E prop and now it only pulls 11 amps max.

How could HL recommend this and how are some people not having problems with an 8x8E?
I have since bought a Wattmeter to keep me in the dark no longer...
I just hope having my motor/esc shut down a total of maybe 6 times hasn't done any permanent damage.

Anybody have any thoughts or recommendations?

Thanks,

Chris

Hey fishbone,
I just ordered my Diamond as recomended from HL. After seeing your post im wondering if i should exchange my jeti 18 for a higher rated speed control before i open it. can you or someine else tell me what the Amp relationship is between motors and controllers -does the motor have to be rated less than the controller unless your gonna limit the motor draw by changing prop size. Im not new to RC airplanes but I am new to electrics -Thanks!

yesterday i maidened a v-diamond with the recommended setup, and everything went well. i felt the cg was probably too far back, but i'm not 100% sure since i don't have a manual to go off of (will search rcg for this info in a minute). i flew at a fairly small park and quickly realized this rocket should have a full sized field for a safe maiden (and at least until you get very familiar with it). she definitely doesn't like turning slow in confined areas; she went 45deg nose down & lost altitude fast during my first attempts at rolling in to my final (this made for at least 3 frightening moments). in fact i did not have enough room to setup a good approach, and accidentally fell in to my final right after a low recovery (came out 5' high & level, perfectly lined up with the runway, i was soooo lucky).

with the 8x8 prop, it does seem amp hungry sitting still on the bench, but once you're up to flying speeds (closer to pitch speed) i'm sure the amps drop quite a bit. so in fact the 16A setup is about right for this plane, it's just the steep pitch that makes it seem too hot on the bench. at half throttle i'd guess she was pushing a solid 40-50mph flat & level. again, the park was just too small to open her up & take her for what she's worth, and i can't wait to open it up & blaze some HUGE lines at a larger field.

overall i'd say the VDiamond is OK if you want fast, but i think a projeti would break 100mph much easier.
