Default Tigershark 400 EDF

hi everyone
i need help with the Tigershark 400 edf's as im havin trouble with mounting the battery []
This plane has only got a small battery compartment opening, it's if i try to use hook and loop it holds the battery ok but then i cant get the battery back out without ripping the hook and loop off and i think i will damage the batterys and plane if i have to keep doing that[].
is anyone out there having the same trouble as me!! if so have you sorted this out

Thanks for the help in advance

I am interested in this plane as well. How well is the mold quality and durability of the plane? Also in reply to your question, it does seem that they supply a ply electronics mount with the kit. It should suffice as a strong durable mount for the battery that will not break upon seperation of the hook and loop material. At least that is what I can derive from the photos. Gook-luck.[8D]

Thanks Hoversmooth999

I have now sorted the problem out and well All i can say about it now is wow , nice and fast but also stable when flying slow.
I now have 2 of these, both are brushless versions and cant get enough of flying them, i use 1300mah 20c 3s packs and get about 6 mins of intermeadite full throttle.
Now ive sorted this little problem out hopefully i can help others when building there's so i hope this helps,
the first idea i had was about the wings and came up with this:

1. Glue the wings and tail fins on before you put the main body together, you can put the main body of the plane on a flat surface you can then get i right angle and measure from it and you can then get your wings etc straight.
then glue the back two halfs together first of course installing the fan etc first

The other idea and why i first started this post is:THIS IS IF YOU ARE NOT GOING TO INSTALL RETRACTS,

2. When installing the servo tray in the front copy it just making the servo holder then glue this in, then glue a piece of light ply on to the bottom of the plane at the front, this makes it easy to install hook and loop and to take the batterys in and out !!

ive been building planes for about ten years now and this is one of the best edf ARTF planes ive seen for the price

hope this helps
Rob

If it flys i wont it

Ok guys
Here the report! She flies, she flies, and she flies!

I have had 15-20 mph gust today. Fast or slow she is just like the video.

I feel like its assembly is going to be above some’s skill level.

All in all she’s a winner.

If you don't mind me asking, how much $ did the retracts add to the cost of the airplane? I don't know if it is just the nature of EDF but it seems like on my EDF F18 that there is little power at slow speed (when hand launching) and perhaps taking off from the ground with more speed is a safer way to go?

Thanks for the link. They look like they would be great for foamy jets. I had put some mechanical ones in my F22 but ended up adding too much weight. Seems like this would be a lighter setup. Pretty sparse on the details on the web page. What has been your experience with them? I'm tempted to order a set now.

JohnnyJet It seems as if there were some slight variations in your construction (aileron servo placement) compared to what I've seen on the JPerkins Dis. website. Was that an Idea of your own? I'm ordering one of these edf's as well, but I do not want the added weight of the retracts and extra servos, and without all that extra hardware, it should be much easier to assemble as well. From what I can derive, I have seen three videos of this jet fly. One from the manufacture's website, and two others on Google video, that are all being hand thrown and start flying without any lag at all. In otherwords it seems that there is no need for bungee on this jet. They really don't even toss that hard. The foam factor helps a lot here. If ya'll want to catch those other two videos, they are from Google video and it seems if you simply type the phrase- wif rc video you will see them pop up or you can find them mixed in with the other rc jet videos. Both of them show on board footage as well! You can see the Tigershark decal on the side of the fuselage.[8D]

Hello hoversmooth999

Yes you busted me the servo mod is mine.
When you get your kit you will see the aileron servo is on the belly of the plane.

Skids are provided also for the no retract version to protect that servo.

But in the retract version, a gear up landing could be bad. (Hobby people’s phase 3 fantom has a great fix for this.)BTW

My servo mod opens up doors for options and tweaks a lot of modelers demand.

The model you see in my photo is using 6 channels to fly but, as you know 3 channels is all it requires.
I also have another kit in the box for a 3 channel setup, but at this time the wow factor with the ROG is so great I cannot thank about the hand launching.

The videos you suggested are supper and a must see.

Johnny

That seems like a great mod Johnnyjet and I will probably end up doing the same on my model! I be sure to post pics of mine when it arrives and is completed. Still trying to finish my TGA Mig-29 first though. Hope to see more great photos of that Tigershark 400 EDF. Thanks.

Just got my TS ... it looks fun, I will go with a Multiplex Permax 400 6D (3,400 KV) b/less and a CC25. Hope she is not that hard to build, I just don't like the idea of trimming the shroud to fit. What if I trim it wrong?!

tiantci
dont worry about trimming the shroud, its easy, just use some scissors, thats what I did.

There are challenging parts to the build tho, like the tail feathers and wings... but you will be ok, no worries!
Enjoy

hello,

I am interested in getting the tigershark and was wondering if by adding the retracts, does it take anything away from the performance? How much work is it to install the retracts? Do they come with instructions on how to install them?
thanks

With retracts it will be heavier of course, performance will change ... landing speeds should increase a little (relatively), less speed etc. For me its a small plane ... just keep it simple. Still with the landing gear she will be something to show off for sure.

I have read that this model is not very durable, has anybody made any mods they could share?

I am looking at either the tigershark 400, or getting a red arrow rtf (link below)

Anybody have an opinion?

No model is really durable ... I had 5 Micro Jets ... they got smashed. This is a cheap foam plane but if we take some care they always last.

In Response to Oct 2. I just purchased one of the Red Arrows RTFs and should be receiving it by tomorrow. I'll let you know how well the quality is. Still planning on buying the Tigershark 400 as well though. Regards[8D]

I am a little late to the party, but better late than never. I am reviewing this plane for RCU. Had my maiden today and it went incredibly. Using the recommended brushless setup this thing cooks. It was really easy to handlaunch. I was actually suprised it was as stable as it was at both full speed and in power off glides close to stall speed. Once I get everything organized, I will probably post a build thread.

I just got a Permax 400 BL 6D into the fan unit ... I am getting only 28,500 RPM and drawing 18A. I think it will be enough to fly her. There is a decent amount of thrust.

Mike - hope to read your build thread soon!

Any updates?

I used the stock (red brushless 3600kv) motor and after about 8 flights....shes dead. The motor gets way too hot and it got toasted. I ordered another one and going to install a heat sink on this one. However, I don't think this motor is going to do it. I am looking at maybe an AON 2815-3600.

Any ideas on what motor would give similar performance and still kick butt?

This jet hauls butt.

hey noahb
how did you get your motor out of the plane with the ducted fan glued in?

did anyone else have this problem with the red brushless motor?

I have about a half dozen flights on mine (6 min average each) and havent noticed a heating problem. I measured the heat upon landing for the first couple of flights and it was only 95 degrees. This was on a 70 degree day.

This is what I did:

I cut about a 2" rect. piece out of the top right in front of the verticle fin. I pulled the speed control towards the motor and cut the wires in the best place possible. The screws that hold the motor to the fan housing can be accessed thru the inlet. Then I took the nut loose and the motor just drops out. Will be a little harder to get in, but it's not impossible.

This is my setup:

TP2100 3s pack
CC25
red motor 3600kv I think.

I don't fly full throttle all the time, but I do a few passes at full throttle and then a few at or below half. The jet seemed fine for the first 4 flights, but after that I landed one time and I could smell the motor. I put a heat sink on it (went in thru the bottom and then sealed it back up) and went flying. The first time I landed (before the heat sink) that I could smell the motor, I checked the temp and it was like 170deg. Way too hot. When it smoked, it was over 200.

There was no vibration, and everything was free turining. I either got a bad motor, or it may not be enough for my flying style. I will tell you that I have my timer set for 5min. and when I land, I put back in around 1600-1700 on avg.

any thoughts?
