hey guys this is my first post on here. im a long time rc addict and am active on other forums for my boats.. ok so heres the deal: i have a f-15 from hobby king and bought a storm 70 edf for it, mystery 200 amp esc non-bec, 4's 30c 3300 mah lipo's.. i hooked up a bec and soldered in 4mm leadson the motorand bench tested for motor polarity and at 1/4 throttle the motor sputters and started smoking...? i cant figure out if this is a motor problem or an esc problem? both are brand new and solder joints are superb, the motor to esc wires are 8" and battery leads 4.5 " .the motor starts easy and runs very smooth until 1/4 throttle...im not able tofind support from hoffman and i dont have another esc to diag. and rule out the esc as the problem.. any thoughts??? please help!

I installed a pair of HM 60mm fans with Mighty Mite motors in my SU-34 and set the timing at low as suggested in the instructions. I got the same issue as you described so i changed the ESC's to mid timing and the miss/sputter moved to mid throttle. I finally programmed high timing and the miss dissappeared. Both motors run smoothly all the way to full throttle now. They draw a bit more amps now but i have good throttle response. I would try changing the timing and see if that doesn't help.

OK, AFTER SWAPPING OUT MOTORS AND ESC'S BATTERIES 3/4s TO DIAG....I FOUND THAT THE MYSTERY 200 AMP ESC IS JUST NOT COMPATABLE W/ THE HOFFMAN MOTOR, I TRIED ALL THE TIMMING ADVANCEMENT MODESAND NONE WERE SUCCESSFUL.... I TRIED A GENERIC 60 AMP ESCAND IT RAN GREAT. SOOO NEXT QUESTION : IS THERE A CHEAPER PRICED ESC THAT IS COPMPARABLE TO A PHEONEX 120 ESC? IN OTHER WORDS HAS ANYONE TESTED AND IS RUNNING A CHEAPER ESC WITH THE HOFFMAN STORM. IT DOES RECCOMEND THE PHEONEX 120 SO I NEED AT LEAST A 120 AMP ESC. PLEEEEEASE HELP!!!!! I DONT WANT TO SPEND 160-70 BUCKS ON AN ESC...

??? 4,480 KV MOTOR ON 5s ??? are you sure about that? now let me get this strait, kv times volt.= rpm. so ea. cell lipo is actually 1 volt higher than rated. so a 3 cell is (app.)12.6 v. x 4,880 kv= 61480 rpm, 4 cell =16.8 X 4880=80,032rpm 5 cell=21 v. x 4880kv=102480!!!!! IM NOT EVEN SEEING AS HOW THE MOTOR IS ONLY RATED FOR 54,000 RPM THEY SAY RATED AT 3-4 CELL..? ARE MY CALCULATIONS WRONG??? i must be doing something wrong after all these years..?

The Storm 70 is not recommended for 3s setup according to the instructions that come with the unit. 4130 kv...Max amps 125...1800 watts...up to 4.3 lbs. of thrust...54,000 rpm...4 to 5 cell lipo.
Recommendations from instruction sheet included with motor:
CC 80 Amp for 4s or CC 125 Amp for 5s.
Batteries 25-40c 3300mah-4000mah lipo
I'm not questioning your calculations...just giving you the info from HM instructions included with motor.

YOUR TALKING ABOUT "THE BEAST" MOTOR. I HAVE "THE WILD BEAST". THE KV IS 4880. THATS WHY IM CONCEARNED ABOUT PUTTING IT ON 5'S.. I DONT THINK THAT WOULD LAST VERY LONG.. NO, TOTALLY.. I THOUGHT YOU UNDERSTOOD THE KV OF THIS MOTOR AND THATS WHY I WAS ASKING ABOUT MY CALCULATIONS. DIDNT MEAN TO SOUND RUDE
THANKS ... P.S JUST OPENED MY PARCEL THAT HAS MY CC 125 ESC
