Mkikta, very nice build, covering looks great, looks as though you are including the MAD boom, is it functional ?. too bad the wing mounting bolt holes are so pronounced, I will have to study that when I progress to that point but just now it is cold in my shop. keep the photos coming

I thought I might cover the engine mount holes with Ultracoat but I will wait and see how it flys and how everything performs first. Don't think I can cover the wing bolt holes since I will need to take the wings off to transport it. At first I thought I might make the Mad boom functional, but I felt like the weight was getting up there so I just made a non-function Mad boom tip sticking out of the hole. So far with everything I think I need to put it the aircraft, seems like it will weigh in around 9 lbs, maybe a teeny bit more.

S-3 viking Build
 

I have attached my latest photos. I took a break for a while as I was getting frustrated with the electronics portion. I decided to build an ARF (CMP 90 mm F-9 Cougar) before trying to fly this S-3. I only had Foamy EDFs previously and decided I should master a faster/larger Balsa EDF before tackling the Viking. So I have now flown the Cougar a couple of times. I'm glad I did as its much more of a handful compared to my Foam RC Lander F-9 panther or GWS A-4 that I was flying. I also purchased the DX-18 which should help me with the landing gear door sequencing, which was one of the frustrations I was having. I'm trying to keep the weight down and this should help.

Anyway I believe the Viking airframe is just about finished except the nose gear doors. Now on to more work on sequencing, radio and CG. Mark

Hi Mark, that looks perfect. i am very impressed of your building qualities.

Do you already know the weight? I think your additional flaps will help you to get lower takeoff and landing speed even with heigher weight, than we have on the "Standard Viking".

So take your time to build up more experience with your Cougar. That will help you with the S-3.
But with correct CG and longitudinal dihedral this S-3 ist easy to fly.

Mark, great photos, attention to construction details is quite evident. Looks like you chose the WeMoTec evo 70 fans in which I plan on using if I can get motivated(too many irons in the fire)

Attached here are two pictures of my completed model in the shop. You can see my makeshift CG stand used while working the CG.

Here I have attached some photos of my inside layout which is pretty crowded. First you can see a view from the removed cockpit looking aft. I built a battery box for the two batteries and mounted the two ESCs on either side of that box. I built it a bit beefy because the two batteries are pretty heavy. Next you can see what I have done between the wing attaching bolt area and the aft part of the wing attachment opening. I added a piece between the former to hold the two small air cylinders which operate the Landing Gear down-locks. You can also see where I mounted the 8 channel expander for my 9 channel spectrum receiver. I mounted the air tank aft of that area inside the fuselage just above the retracts. I mounted the Ldg gear down-lock servo and valve on the left side of the fuselage between the outside wall and battery box and I mounted the retract servo and valve on the RT side of the fuselage.

I have attached four pictures of my S-3 at our flying field when I did my high speed taxi testing. A couple of shots on one of our Gieser Benches and a couple on the runway. I had a setting wrong on the camera so they came out a bit dark. I'll take some better ones soon now that the weather is getting better.

1) What does it weigh? Seems like it would be kinda heavy.
2) how did you make the gear doors work. Would like to see that close up.
3) What motor and batt setup are you using?

Skyhawknut,My Viking weighs in about 10lbs a few oz ready to fly. It's a bit heavy I feel. That's why I designed operable flaps right from the beginning. After the first taxi test I switched motors to the HET 2W-20s on the 4C 5000MAH batteries. I believe I'm getting close to 3lbs thrust per motor, so thats around 6lbs thrust at 10lbs gross weight. Don't think I can get much better for 4C. It feels better on the high speed taxi test than the previous 2W-22s did. I need a lot more practice flying high performance EDFs before I'll takle this airplane. Ill keep practicing with my CMP F-9 Cougar for a while until I feel more comfortable flying it first. It weighs in at approx 8 lbs with a 90mm EDF.

Nav-air,Thanks for the nice coments, I wanted it to look like the one I flew in Desert Storm. Now I need more confidence to fly it after spending almost 2 years to build it.

Here is my plane during Operation Desert Storm onboard USS America CV-66. Ugly but beautiful, if you know what I mean. :)

However it looks very ready for maiden on the centerline of your runway, don't hurry. Practice more flying to be safe for this beauty.

It's finally feeling like spring here in Maryland. I finally got my Viking out for some fresh air and decided to take some good pictures at the field. I'm hoping to feel more proficient with my jets so I can fly it later this season.
