Problems With E-Flite Havoc..
I was recently given a crashed E-Flite Havoc. I have a few friends that witnessed them fly and they told me that they are hard to fly. If you get them too slow they will snap and go in. After buying a new wing and fuse, I finally got it finished. According to the build/assembly instruction, there are two ways to set it up. If you want to fly it like a true jet, then every control surface should be set to neutral. The CG range is rather large. 100mm to 125mm from the wing leading edge at the fuse. If you want to fly it around slow, then the control surfaces need to be set different. For slow flight, the ailerons need to be set 2mm UP and the elevator needs to be set to 2mm DOWN. Now I have been flying for 58 years and I don't recall ever setting control throws different to achieve slow flight or fast flight. Well I decided to use my incident meter and check it out. I was SHOCKED to find these settings. Sitting on a level floor, the main wing reads 1.5º pos. The tips read 2.5º pos. That means there are 2.5º WASHIN. It no wonder the thing wants to snap on landing. The Horizontal stabilizer in set at 1.5º negative. This would cause it to climb real fast. If the CG is set to the max rear CG, it will snap in a heartbeat. I don't know any other way to explain it. Maybe at my age, I am settled into relaxing flight, but I still like my speed. Commits welcome.....
