Savex L-39 as EDF
I know there is a huge thread on turbine operations but what is the scoop on the EDF version of this plane. I will be ordering one soon and want to gather information on the conversion. Thanks, Doug

RE: Savex L-39 as EDF
Dave
My L39 was put together this afternoon. The power set up is as follows DS51 lEHNER1940 Spin 99 opto I am trying 8s 5000 Thunder power cells Weight is 8LBS Watts are 1590 I was expecting around 1800watts Watts per pound 198 which may not be enough for a good performance. My friend has flown the previous set up on 7lbs at 1033watts on a Plettenburg which was 147 watts per pound which was good but lacking which is why I changed the power set up. Any how I will know how the new set up performs by tomorrow evening if the weather is OK, |
RE: Savex L-39 as EDF
Thanks Mark, keep me informed. It's Doug by the way. I will be using the DS51 with Neumotor 1515-1.5Y at 10s so should be over 2000 watts. This is the setup being used in the new Tamjets EDF F-16. 150 + mph. Doug

RE: Savex L-39 as EDF
Sorry Doug
Had a friend fly the L39 this evening very stable and smooth.I have a problem getting the carriage up but I will work on it this week. I do not have flaps on it but still managed to get off the grass strip. Flew for five minutes at half power with a couple of full fly pasts. I have put back 2800 into the packs. I will try and upload the take off.2000 watts will be great. Hope that helps Mark |
RE: Savex L-39 as EDF
Mark, i just sent Savex my money. I had the L-39 silver version with the Wren 44. A great flying little combo but ended up selling before something happened. probably had 30 flights on it. What gear are you using, i have allways had good luck with gear, it's all about preperation and engineering. have you seen the video of the l-39 with lehner 1950 setup. It is literally faster than my turbine, i kid you not. thats when i decided to get one and do edf conversion. What does savex give you for ducting and how hard is it to install? Doug

The retracts are A1 with Jet tronic control. I have posted a video with a take off and landing.Posted under l39edf Regards from a sunny England Mark |
RE: Savex L-39 as EDF
Can't find the video, is it on rcgroups? Doug

Doug
I posted here in the video section . It may take a few hours to process but the site told me it was succesful. Posted as L39 EDF Mark |
RE: Savex L-39 as EDF
Mark , i don't think your video made it. Funny thing is i was searching L39 and found a video of my jet from Singapore. It's the Silver , black and red one with a white rudder. He's flying the heck out of the jet and now i miss it. Can't wait to get my new one and try EDF.

RE: Savex L-39 as EDF
Hello there,
for interesting, here is a link from my L39, third flight at the Villesse Jet Meeting Italy. Have Fun. Regards Reinhard http://www.myvideo.de/watch/1453647 |
RE: Savex L-39 as EDF
Reinhard
Great video. Do you know how many watts you are pulling and also what your L39s weight with packs is. Many thanks Mark |
RE: Savex L-39 as EDF
Hi Mark,
thank“s well, in the Video i flew with 9 S no name 3900 Lipos and had 56 Amps and 4,3 kg. Now i have the new Saehan 4000 in it and i must really say, wow, what a different. The Amps are now 63 and the weight is 4,4 kg. I know, it seems a bit heavy, but the L39 flies superb. Last weekend was taken a speed mesure with a Radar Gun and it was 230 Kmh. I would say not bad for an Electric Jet. The Watt range is at the 1900- 2000 i think. Regards Reinhard |
RE: Savex L-39 as EDF
Mark, how is the landing without flaps? I ordered flaps but do to a screw up between banks on the money transfer i won't be getting them. My turbine version had flaps and they worked well. I'm considering doing mine bungee lauch only which will take the weight down quite a bit. We have a good size stable of bungee/edfs from sniper to Aeronaut panther. I can always add gear later... RE: Savex L-39 as EDF
Hi Doug
I have cut flaps into the wing which was fairly straight forward. the landing and take off is a lot better. I did make the mistake of following the first line on the wing which was a mistake as the flap hinge splits on the top surface. The cut to make is the one a couple of mm from the aileron line. Regards Mark |
RE: Savex L-39 as EDF
I searched all over to find this thread. Nothing on RCGroups other than my question.
I take that back. I did find a thread by Ksonn. Unfortunately it is not a step by step build that I prefer. Installing retracts etc. It is also several years old and Ksonn didn't keep the plane. http://www.rcgroups.com/forums/showthread.php?t=382085 The following is what I posted at rcgroups. Do any of you know if this one being sold by icare is the exact same one you are getting from czech? Might save some time. I'm going to call icare. Are you guys using retract doors to cover the hole for retracts? Did plane come with the doors cut out or with wood reinforcement for you to easily mount the retracts? http://www.icare-rc.com/l39_albatros.htm Says it's 1/8th scale, 48" span, 58" length. I've found some info on Schreiner/ Savex L39 and appears similar. Maybe the same. Saw a video of Chris True's that was REALLY fast. For the size this one is priced pretty well at $550. $49 get flaps, $225 gets retract ready and a set of retracts, $185 gets a cusom paint job. I'd go for all that for $1,060. Better fly nice for that. Anyway, has anyone done a build thread on this bird? Also waiting for Tam to finish his F16 with a package for retracts and whatever is needed to make doors open and close. Will be worth the wait for him to get a complete kit and assembly guide together. And still waiting for retract ready version of Aeronaut Panther. Carl |
RE: Savex L-39 as EDF
Carl
I havent found any build thread s. I would recommend 10s with a Schubeler . Everyone I speak to loves their Savex. Order with flaps and rudder. Hope that helps Mark |
RE: Savex L-39 as EDF
Savex just shipped mine today. I just finished my yellow A-4 now this will be coming to keep me busy. There is a huge construction thread in the turbine section for jets, i think it's Wren 44/Savex L-39 Pictures. 3 years old and still going.

RE: Savex L-39 as EDF
I called icare today but couldn't get through. Does it appear to be the same one you guys ordered?
Do you know if the doors are already cut and the retracts ready to drop in if you order with retracts? Maybe that's just something icare is doing. Will try emailing them. |
RE: Savex L-39 as EDF
Here's a pic of the bottom of the plane. Shows servo openings for flaps and ailerons as well as recess for retracts and wheels. Doesn't look like the wheels would then be covered by a door.

RE: Savex L-39 as EDF
There are no gear doors on the Savex l-39 model. You could fit them on the nose but the mains will tough as the wing is thin. Fly great without them. Doug

I got a quote from icare. They have one painted with all options in stock. Pictures "should" be attached if I did it right. Retracts look great. They should for $700. For a custom paint job they are saying 2-3 months for delivery.
Is this what you guys are paying? Are you getting them painted or just silver and you paint? What is the time from order until delivery? Carl, here a complete quote: Base price: 549.00U$ with options add: 90mm edf ducting: 145.00U$ flaps:59.00U$ rudder: 42.00U$ ready for retracts: 59.00U$ pneumatic retract accessories: 82.00U$ pneumatic retract Jet-1A (complete): 699.00 US custom airbrush: 185.00U$ Moki fan 90mm with AC 22/6S: 349.00U$ Thanks! RE: Savex L-39 as EDF
Carl, you better grab that if they have in stock. I just spent $900 plus and 2 month wait from Savex for one with a paint job. If i would have known about one being available here in the states i would have bought regardless of paint scheme. The dollar exchange rate for euro killed me plus the receiving bank now charges you for the money transfer along with your bank. Due to the unknown bank charge on the other end i was not able to get the flaps as i ordered. So 900 and some dollars and i have to cut out my own flaps and servo well which means no live hinge.... RE: Savex L-39 as EDF
I don't know Doug, this one is $860 and I'm having a hard time getting over the stripes going in different directions. Spending an extra $100 and getting a paint job you really like seems like not much considering I'll have nearly $2,000 in it after motor, esc, ubec, batteries, fan, etc.
How did you go about picking a custom paint job? |
RE: Savex L-39 as EDF
I misunderstood and thought you were paying $700 for the jet. That scheme is bit tough. Forget the $700 retracts too, get a set of spring-air 301's for about $200 and buy individual robart struts that slip on the 5/32" wire. They are about 35-40 bucks. I'll see if i have any pics of my turbine version. I got the Shipping notice from airfreight that the L-39 is on the way. You can always paint the wing to get rid of those stripes..... Doug P.S. You go on Savex site and click on the pictures, it tells you what number scheme it is so you can ask for it by No.
