RE: flyzone diablo
North: My condolences on you fj, it happens. And you did answer my question so thank you. I got my new wings today and attatched those black spacer pieces that were used to hold the hyperflow pod in the fuse. Those two black plastic pieces. Well, I glued those in front of the servos like small nacelles that protect them, I'll post some pics when I get a chance to explain.
|
RE: flyzone diablo
animal: That's a good use for those spacers. I was thinking about gluing some type of foam nacelle from some other plane. Maybe make it look like an external fuel tank or missle. I have to see what's out there. I might try to fly the Diablo with advanced wings tomorrow afternoon to get a feel for how it flys. I'm a little hesitant because I only have the brushed motor to fly with and I don't know if the plane will be fast enough to stay in the air.

RE: flyzone diablo
Hello all, it has been a while since my last post. Good to see the love hate relationship is still going strong! [8D] If anyone here has considered a different fan unit and motors, there are some other options out there. I have a WeMo Mini Fan 480, using a TYPHOON 2W, on 3s2p. I get alittle over 2 pounds of thrust, at 440+ watts, 40+ Amps. The HET TYPHOON 2W I got from Warbird RC, and it was about $50. Shipping was fast as hell. As for the WeMo, everyone seems to be out of stock. However, I am told of a "CLONE" I'm not sure how much of a clone this is, but they are avaible on Aircraft Worlds site for $26.00... from what I see, the mount tabs and a intake duct rig is all that is different. Feel free to check them out! I am working on designs for the beginner style EDF plane using the wemo/motor. Any suggestions would be great, as to what people would like. I hope to make a plane that can be assembled easily. So far, I have an idea which might allow for the fuse to be made in less than an hour with a simple foam cutter. We'll see though.
Thought, what about cutting the wings about where the fist inboard panel changes to the outer panel, placing a hard point there, and making dumby tanks to act as skies? Just a though. It there anything you can think of design wise that you guys would like to see? As I work on this, I am wondering, do people want a "stealthy" look, or is room for upgrades more important. I would like this to be a "first" trainer, but be a plane that others can throw nickels at and turn into a nice jet. Scale looks are obviously out of the question. Any suggestions? -WR |
RE: flyzone diablo
WR: I suggest providing a basic platform which allows for flexability of options regarding upgrades, try not to be too rigid in design specifics, that will limit your choices. A strong framework not too big would be nice. Above all some actual quality not the crap Ive seen in the diablo.
|
RE: flyzone diablo
North: I would be careful with the brushed motor the plane is not good on takeoff you will need lots of room and when you turn it want to nose over. If you have experience though you should be ok. And if you can fly it like that then consider it good practice and your honing your skills.
|
RE: flyzone diablo
animal: that's what i was thinking may happen. I may try it in an alfalfa fied nearby so if it does go down on takeoff there won't be much if any damage
|
RE: flyzone diablo
North: when are you gonna put you new edf setup on it?
|
RE: flyzone diablo
animal: as soon as i get all the parts, nothing has come in yet. I have the pod all ready to go.
|
RE: flyzone diablo
animal: I received my new motor and XF Fan. I'll be putting that together sometime this week. I'm still waiting for my E-Flight esc though.
Why don't you install this edf combo on yours? http://www.airpacmodels.com/twe/prod...8a19c162554afc |
RE: flyzone diablo
North: If you could have been here to hear me laugh at that! Can you say warp factor 10! I think I'll pass but it's very kind of you to reccommend such an alternative. As far as your edf is concerned how many rpm will you be running? I remember you brought up the 50K limit on the hyperflow and if memory serves me the XF you just got should go 60K. What if I got a different fan for my edf that could withstand higher rpm, because that is the only component that would be affected by the rpm load wouldnt you agree?
Also A larger diameter fan is gonna give more thrust whereas more rpm will give more speed. Correct? |
RE: flyzone diablo
animal: the XF edf has a rating of 60,000 rpms your correct. I wonder if you could switch the hyperflow fan with the XF fan which is a triple blade? I can take my XF fan and see if it will match up with the Hyperflow unit, I'll let you know if it's possible. As far as thrust and speed, I would assume that a fan will work similar to a prop. I think you are correct in your assessment, but don't forget about the pitch of the fan blades. That is also going to be a factor in speed and thrust. I'm really not an expert in aerodynamics though.

RE: flyzone diablo
Guys: I think I might have covered this but going to another fan unit/motor combination is going to draw more amps. More amps means bigger speed controller and new battery. You're going to end up with a whole bunch of fried electronics unless you have a watt meter. Or, you could just chuck the turd and get a Twister that does fly great right out of the box with no modifications.

RE: flyzone diablo
paul: I will be installing an E-Flight 60 amp ESC with my new motor & 4s LiPo. That should handle the additional draw. I did get a watt meter just to make sure everything jives together. I know the Twister is a great plane. I really think highly of Multiplex products. I learned on an EasyStar & I also have a Funjet that is just an awesome flyer.

RE: flyzone diablo
Hey I have a story about a radio that likes to glitch, it liked to glitch at the worst of times, and it did so today at the expense of my plane. You all have been talking about this radio for a long time and yes I have had glitches but not fatal ones, well not any more.
As I came in for a pass it did its thing and the aileron snaped and the plane flipped and slammed into a great big ole'hickory. I retrieved the remnants only after the use of my chainsaw and some running, away. So basically I would like a bit of advice as to a good dependable radio which will behave properly. North,Paul what say you? |
RE: flyzone diablo
Animal,
You didn't ask my opinion specificly but I will give it to you anyway. I like Futaba and alway's have. Airtronics make some good radios too. If you plan to stay in the hobby I would go ahead and get a computerized radio. If money isn't an issue go with a 2.4G. If it is an issue like with me I would seriouslly look at the Futaba 4EX or 6EX. The 4EX runs $125-150 or sometimes you can pick one up at acution for $100 or so. If you ever plan on moving into prop driven I would seriously consider ordering the Electristar from Tower Hobbies. They have them on special for $199 and if you check around you can find the discount codes. Last month I found one for $25 off $150 or more so I basically got my electristar for $175.00. That is a $150 radio from my lhs with a .40 sized electric trainer for $25. At the very least you can part out the kit and sell off the Plane, motor and ESC on ebay and get a large chunk of your money back and still come out ahead. The 4EX radio comes with Nicds so no more $8 packs of Alkalines. Again this is just my opinion but the electristar is a great deal on a trainer and a great radio with 4 model memory. Sparky |
RE: flyzone diablo
Spark: I am greatful for your input, I should have addressed anyone out there but I thought those two would see it first.
I will look into the futaba, I almost bought a new radio the other day at my lhs but thought it would be ok... Thats what I get. A pile of foam, but my esc and motor are still good, the battery went MIA, too bad for the hickory. Poor tree. |
RE: flyzone diablo
animal: I bought a Spektrum DX7 radio. It is a 2.4 and will fly all models of planes, electric, and gas/glow. Some people don't care for them, but some people have used them with no issues whatsoever. There is no perfect radio out there I learned. I got the radio package delivered to my door for $299 from DonaldsHobby.com (best deal I found)
I had more than one glitch knock my plane out of the air. I know how frustrating it is. What's the relationship between the glitch and the aileron snapping? What are you going to do about anther plane? Another Diablo? Do you have any other planes currently? I looked at this RTF plane http://www.e-fliterc.com/Products/De...ProdID=EFL4800 This plane is a low wing trainer can be set up as electric or gas. It comes with a Spektrum DX6i 2..4 radio. I installed the XF EDF into the pod today and built some new servo protectors underneath the wings. I'm letting the glue dry overnight before testing tomorrow hopefully. I put the XF fan against the hyperflow unit and the fan is too big so that won't work. However, the XF Fan was a pretty good fit into the Hyperflow with a little work. I'll post some pics soon for you guys to check out. |

Here's some pics on what the XF Fan looks like inside the single pod. And this is what I came up with to protect my servos on landings. I used a piece of the fuselage from a scrap diablo.

RE: flyzone diablo
Northchim: Good job on the install. Keep in mind that you have lots more juice going through here now and that the radio that you got with the plane will be total junk because of all the interferiance,. I have a new Futaba 6EX and it has worked great on all my electrics.

RE: flyzone diablo
paul: Thanks for that heads up. I have a DX7 but I haven't programmed my Diablo yet. Do you really think I will have trouble with the stock radio?
|
RE: flyzone diablo
North: I like it. that should keep your servos safe. When are you gonna fly her? and did you adjust the position of the servo rod in relation to the arms? I mean put the rod in the hole that is farthest out for maximum maneuverability. Lastly, what kind of flight time and speeds are you looking at whith this setup?
|
RE: flyzone diablo
North: I forgot to explain, the aileron flipped to the up position but only on one side (glitch), this caused the plane to flip upside down and head downward rapidly, to the tree. I am uncertain what I will do for a replacement but I do know it will be an edf and close to the same size as the diablo, I like the mirage and the L-39 from great planes. Definately will be getting a new radio.

RE: flyzone diablo
Are any of you flying the Styker? I have heard good things about it from people who used to fly the kits but I have yet to find anyone who has flown the RTF version. Advertising 80mph stock and Everyone is telling me they fly vey stable at slow speeds also. I downloaded it to my Simulaor (Realflight G4) and it is a handful to fly on it. I would really like to hear some opinions from someone who has actually flown one.
Thanks, Sparky |
RE: flyzone diablo
animal: I hope to fly this weekend. Hope it flys between 75-100mph, we'll see. When are you going to get a radio and a new plane?
sparky: try a forum on the Stryker. |
RE: flyzone diablo
I had some trouble trying to post on RCUniverse all weekend. Anyone else have the same difficulty?
