RE: flyzone diablo
Yes, infact I couldn''t even check my PM''s, everytime I tried to use the forums, it said it was down for maintenance.

RE: flyzone diablo
If you are putting more amps, power and everything through the power, the radio that came with the plane will not be able to handle it. It''s really a super cheap radio that can barely handle the power it was originally planned for so there''s no way with more juice. I have a Futaba 6EX that''s good and a 9C but there are others. Don''t go cheap, especially with putting all that time into it.

RE: flyzone diablo
Paul: I took your advice and got a radio, a spektrum DX6 at my lhs today, no watt meter yet but Im working on it. Also got a new fuse for my diablo. I want to get another battery and I think you guys said that a 2100 mah will work in this and not be too big.
This is my last foray with the diablo, after this Im getting the L-39 it looks like it should be good. |
RE: flyzone diablo
Animal: Good job on the radio. It''s something you can use going forward. The Futaba that came with the Diablo, not so much. I have to give the guy money back for the one I sold. He wants to use it in a .40 trainer aircraft. A 2100 mah will work in the Diablo, give you more weight up front, more power and longer flight times. I wouldn''t go too much bigger. I think I said Common Sense had cheap batteries (inexpensive). The L-39 looks cool but hold off until some other guys fly it for sure. I had the Synapse, not so good, Diablo, well, we know what that is. OK, cats out of the bag. I do reviews for a magazine. I can''t say which one but might get the L-39 for a review. I know I have a Sapac T-45 coming. Long story how I got the gig and no, you can''t just apply for it.
|
RE: flyzone diablo
animal: I think you''ll really like the DX6. I did not get a chance to fly at all this weekend and now I''m sick, so a few more days of laying low and resting a bit. As far as a battery for the Diablo, as long as the battery weight is under 9oz your OK. The diablo will balance much better.
paul: that''s pretty cool. |
RE: flyzone diablo
Paul: thank you for the input and I look forward to your reviews especially if you do one on the L-39. I am currently bidding on a common sense battery as well so we shall see if I get it.
North: Im sorry to hear that your sick I hope you get up and feeling better soon I must admit I am eager to hear the results of your diablo. |
RE: flyzone diablo
I haven''t been out with the Diablo since the upgraded motor shaft broke, and I''ve been slow to fix since I have the Yardbird Mig-29. I bought the DX6i and I love it.
Well yesterday I put the Mig into power wires so I grabbed a new pod from a scratch-n-dent plane and flew today. It was fun, but slow; powered glider that looks really kewl is my final assessment. I bought another $16 BL to restore the faster performance I got used to. I think the $35 for motor and ESC are well worth it, and I think with the pod on top the motor shaft and hyperflow won''t takw such a beating. I''ll let yall know how it works out. |
RE: flyzone diablo
Hey Erik: what kind of motor did you break? I broke one too the ammo 20-40-3500 the one that is reccommended on the box. Did you hit something? And get the advanced wings, it makes all the difference in the world with the brushless. You will be happy.
|
RE: flyzone diablo
Erik,
What brushless motor and esc are you using and where are you getting them for $35? The recomended one from Tower is like 39 for th motor and 35 for the esc. I had a fatal with my diablo today. Was landing into a pretty hefty wind and was standing up against a building to block the wind from me. Broght the diablo in for a soft landing at my feet but forgot to take into account the wind wasn''t blowing close to the building. Pretty landing but had picked up so much speed before toching the ground that it skidded almost 20 feet into the corner of the garage and broke the wing and fuse both in half. I pulled out the Scratch and dent and ready to go again in the morning. I am fixing to upgrade to the parkzone trojan but if I can upgrade the diablo to brushless and short wings reasonable I will do that too. I have had alot of fun with the diablo and have flown almost daily since purchasing it 5 or 6 weeks ago. John |
RE: flyzone diablo
Sparky: He''s probably on e-bay, if you check, you can get comparable stuff that is cheaper than what is reccommended by the maker. And get the advanced wings already! All you people that are messing with those old stock wings need to wake up.
Here I say wake up but I too am still working with this plane so I have no room to talk. |
RE: flyzone diablo
Well boys, today was one of my worst flying days in my short pilot career. I trashed both the Diablo and Funjet. Broke the Diablo fuse and various other parts in a nose dive crash. Luckily all the electronics are still working. I am not replacing the Diablo and will be moving on. For now I am not rebuilding my Funjet either. I will go back to my old faithful EasyStar for a while. It is probably for the best, since I was spending a lot of time and dollars on this bird that really wasn't worth it. 3 Diablos was enough. I will check in on you guys from time to time as long as this thread lasts. Gary

RE: flyzone diablo
North,
My condolences on your losses. Luckily I have not totally trashed a plane since I re-started my flying, but I can remember what it feels like from years ago. I do have a whole new respect for you and others in this thread and the glitches you have spoken of with the stock radio. I decided to retire my original diablo yesterday and pull the new one I had ordered from S and D out to play. I haven't had any crashes in quite awhile and have gotten so comfortable with the diablo I hardly ever get more than 10-15 feet off of the ground. I launched this morning for the first time and within 10 seconds I was looking for altitude. I made two passes trying to trim the plane and it was glitching so bad I thought something was loose on the rudder. I finally got it back down and give it the once over and everything seems to be tight. Another flight and same results. It is a constant glitch in the rudder with periodic glitching in the ESC. When i finally got it back down I put it in the truck. Went to the LHS this afternoon and bought the Parkzone Trojan. After reading the thread on here and watching the videos I was really impressed. LHS owner said he would like to try it sometime before I totally trashed it so went back by late this afternoon to let him try it out. He almost didn't fly it because the wind was 15-20mph but he finally went for it. Verrry impressive. Handled well in the wind and would actually fly vertical out of the box. I was a too chicken to fly in the high winds right beside a major highway since it has been 20 years since I have flown a plane with alerions but I can't wait untill tomorrow. I also ordered a reciever for my 4EX to put in the diablo. I'm going to also order a brushless setup for it as soon as I figure out which motor and ESC to buy. Good luck on your next project and I will miss reading of your experiences with the flying turd. Sparky |
RE: flyzone diablo
I thought the diablo was a good plane until I bought a parkzone trojan. Now I feel sick looking at that piece of crap that is sitting next to the trojan. I want to sell the diablo but it is such a dud I feel bad for anyone who buys it. The diablo was a good idea but they skimped way to much on the motor which makes it a pain to fly. And the modifications they made for the plane are just a bad joke. Hobbico should refund all the money they took for those parts especially the twin engines. They actually made my plane unable to fly now that is just sad. As for the parkzone I just love it they did a great job making that plane. It is very good quality and it has plenty of power which will be good for a long time.

RE: flyzone diablo
The upgraded motor I got is this: $16.50
http://www.hobbycity.com/hobbycity/s...idProduct=4202 And I got a 30 amp ESC: $8.99 http://www.hobbycity.com/hobbycity/s...idProduct=6460 Plus about $8 shipping. It screamed! It may have been too much power for a Hyperflow that wasn't perfectly balanced and that is why the shaft broke? I have another on the way and will try again, and maybe this time I'll use advanced wings. Can't wait. |
RE: flyzone diablo
I have been reading this thread for a couple days since I bought a diablo of scratch and dent, it shipped today, bought it with very slight tail damage and due to previous scratch and dent buys it should be a real easy fix, for 82 bucks I figured what the heck, also ordered the advanced wings, I have been flying for awhile and can throw a small 3-D plane around with ease, so I figure it can be to much of a handful, plus I have had alot of in air structural falures on the 3-D planes with successful landings so I'm gonna make sure its setup well and give it a toss with the stock engine, advances wings and "pod on top" mod...I dont even want to mess with slowflyer wings, they recomend the 20-40-3500 brushless but for a minimal if even noticable weight gain I can put the 24-45-3790 in it...of should I go faster, I didnt want to get to high of a KV with the stock fan unit, all the high RPM units I have seen only use 3 blades so they dont draw as much but make up for it in RPM...so I think that would be a decent motor, should have more grunt then the recomended one too...If glitching happens then I'll put my trusty cheap futaba skysport 4 in it...I think alot of the problems are also related to people buying this thinking "jet trainer, sweet" but no one should really start out on ducted fan, I would suggest a parkzone stryker B for a beginner jet-like aircraft, I had an original stryker that flew great, sustained inverted flight on the stock gear(hard to argue with that)...so I'll let you all know how it goes when I get the plane ready and take the pics (before possible disaster)

RE: flyzone diablo
Erik: You say the shaft broke on the motor but did the fan of the hyperflow do ok at that high rpm? From my calculations you are at about 53k rpm assuming your using a three cell. Max is 50k on hyperflow Im trying to find out where the limitations are.
I use an ammo 20-40-4040 with a three cell. Running at about 45K rpm and no problems. Is there another fan that can be bought that will replace the stock one thats better,(higher rpm). Lastly, I hooked up my spektrum DX6 and revved up the motor, and it seems like it goes to a higher rpm? Is this possible when switching from the stock radio reciever setup? |
RE: flyzone diablo
animal: The XF Fan is the same size as the Hyperflow (56mm) and its rated for 60,000 rpm. It fits with minimal modification.
I don't know of anything that causes a radio to do that, but I'm no radio expert either. Could there be another factor that's causing your motor to possibly spin faster? Vertical: I tired that AMMO 24-45-3790 with a 4s and it bent the shaft during static testing. Way too much power for the Hyperflow. 3s should be fine though. Good luck with your Diablo. It sounds like you have the right attitude for this plane. I would not even try the stock radio, it can glitch at any time and send your plane down. Gary |
RE: flyzone diablo
Hey North: Good to see your checking up on us. When you said minimal modification could you be more specific, and when you say the shaft bent, was that because of the fan is not perfectly balanced and did you go over 50k rpm?
|
RE: flyzone diablo
I would guess it bent do to a balance issue, maybe I'll install a better fan when I get the BL setup...like I said I'll let you know, I want to push this thing pretty fast though, I usually go overkill on my power systems...
|
RE: flyzone diablo
animal: it was really pretty easy to install the XF Fan. Try to be as careful as you can when removing the Hyperflow so as not to remove too much foam. I wrapped some tape around the XF to facilitate a tight fit. I also trimmed some plastic around the pod to allow the XF to set back far enough. That's what I remember.
I'm pretty sure the Hyperflow fan was balanced, I think it was too much rpm for the hyperflow to handle. I was almost at full throttle and it was screaming before it let go. Would have been something to see it fly if it could have held up. Gary |
RE: flyzone diablo
Thank you Gary: Do you or for that matter does anyone know of an edf that is rated for higher rpm than the 60K XF? I would like to know what the max is especially in the 55\56mm range. I see brushless inrunner motors with really high kv rates so you know what Im thinking. And Im talking about 3 cell setup.
More rpm more speed. |
RE: flyzone diablo
60,000 rpm is the highest I've seen so far. I would think that the larger edf units would have lower ratings because of their size. So 56mm may have the highest ratings. Gary

RE: flyzone diablo
Just thought I would mention a few things that seem to be over looked. The first is blade pitch as well as number of blades. Those two can change things alot. Also Amps. Rpms can effect alot, I have a HET 2w in a Minifan 480, it is a 4600 KV motor, and running on a 3s2p 4000 mah pack eats about 50 amps, and sucks the battery in a few minutes... puts out about 2 pounds of thrust. Motor under a load will change things, and any motor that gives you that exact Kv under a full load, will probly require alot of amp draw or volts. :) -just a reminder! -WR

RE: flyzone diablo
got my plane today, assembled it and am currently chargin the pack and my tx batterys I had in another radio, I removed the thrust deflecter, pod is on bottom for the first flight cause the field is soft grass, no dirt, sticks or anything so I'll try it like that first, I did mod it to accept the pod on top if nessecary, also figured something else out that may be a problem, the control surfaces dont move so well out of the box, I slit a little of the hinge material with a kinfe and worked them a bit and have great movement now, also moved the linkages to the outermost hole on the rudder and elevater servo horns so I get max throw, fan vibrated terribly so I removed the nose cone and it seemed to fix that problem(I'd like to run the cone but it isnt gonna work) seems to have good thrust, it is a tank indeed though, also cut the battery slot farther foward to balance it, so no added weight to achieve balance...seems like it will fly though...I have gotten more unlikely flyers into the air(not always for long though)....anyway, I'll let you know how things go when I fly it in a little bit

RE: flyzone diablo
If you are in the farthest throw be sure and not too much up elevator on launch. It will stall quick and it doesn't take much movement of the elevator to do so. I too was leary of the slight movement when I my first Diablo arrived but it had more than enough travel. The fan will scoop up grass as well as dirt. The fan on bottom also creates some abrubt stops that can't be good on the electronics. On top it will kind of slide to a stop. I covered the bottom of my Fuse with Red duct tape to help with orientation as well as protect the fuse on landings. Good Luck.
