I am new to electric flight. I purchased as a second plane for my grandson. A Slow Stick. His first plane (destroyed) used a Graupner 280. I used six, seven and eight cell packs. I had no problem. The Slow Stick has a EPS300C. I was told that if you used over 7.2 volts it would burn up the motor. Is this true and what pack do you folks advise for the EPS300C?

The stock pack for the GWS Slow Stick is shown below. It is a [link=http://www.horizonhobby.com/Shop/ByCategory/Product/Default.aspx?ProdID=GWSBP6N400]6-cell 400mAh NiCd[/link] pack which is rather outdated today.
Either a 6 or 7 cell pack will work fine. Many people use a 7-cell NiMH pack that provides double the flight time for a similar weight. Today's Lithium packs allow you to use a 2-cell pack that quadruples your flight time.
Any of these packs that weigh around 3-4oz will work fine.
Good luck!
