I built a Rufe conversion from a GWS Zero, Build thread here http://www.rcuniverse.com/forum/m_9625739/tm.htm
It's only my second electric,, I'm still a newbie
I need a recommendation for a Brushless/esc/battery combo that will get it off the water
I don't need crazy hang it on the prop power, but enough to get on step quick and cruise half throttle in flight
TIA

Scale, I read your other forum, very nice job on the conversion. As for one of your problems, where it wanted to tip forward on take off. Two things to look at, #1 make sure you have enough elevator to keep the tail down until speed is up, #2 you may have too much down angle on the motor, which is pulling the nose over.
Ok as for a cheap good motor look at a Tower Pro 2410-9 and esc, these can usually be gotten as a combo from places like Hobby City, Hobby King.
The 09 is around 900 kv, and will pull around 8 or 9 amps spinning say a 9x6 3 blade prop. I used these motors on all of my GWS birds, gave decent speed, great thrust, and let me spin a 3 or 4 blade prop.
Heck I even used on my E-Flite P47 and P-38, on 3 cells I could hang on the prop on the P-47, which I'm pretty sure weighed more then your GWS with floats.

GG,
Thanks for taking the time to reply,
Just yesterday I tried to use a 3s lipo, I was hoping the extra voltage would be enough to get it up on step then I could back off while flying, It sure seemed like it would in the basement, but when I took it out to the pond the servos were freaking out. I thought the ESC can't handle the 11.1 pack and is sending too much voltage to the Rx. But the BEC circut is putting out 5.06 volts like it should. I think I have a bad servo, it buzzing hard and locks up everything when connected. It may have gotten wet during the flip over. I'm going to do some more testing before I buy a new motor/esc
I was looking at that motor combo you recommend @ hobbyking http://www.hobbyking.com/hobbyking/s...idproduct=4706 I have a question if you know, When you look at the motor only http://www.hobbyking.com/hobbyking/s...idproduct=5111 it shows the plastic mount in the picture for the GWS stick,, But it doesn't show it in the "combo" picture,, you think it comes with it in the combo anyway?

Just to follow up,
I did get a 3s lipo and it seemed when I hooked it up it would be plenty, Monday I took it to the pond and the servos just buzzed and locked. After doing a little tinkering I come to believe the ESC is the problem. It's a real weird problem as it's putting out 5 volts like it should, but it making my FASST Rx Lock up. When I try a regular Rx, it still does the same servo buzzing and glitching. When I bypass the esc and use a regular battery everything works fine with either Rx. My only guess is it's putting out a dirty RF of some sort
I'm not sure if when I flipped it it did get a little wet or the higher voltage pack was the problem, but I really should get a 3s lipo compatible ESC at the minimum, I more than likely will just get a brushless combo compatible with 3s lipos and give it another try.
I'm not impressed with the GWS electronics, The Rx was DOA, works only if the Tx antenna is right on top of the Rx... and now the ESC is dead too (maybe my fault?)
Oh well,, stay tuned, I'm not giving up yet
