That is an oldie but goodie.

Looks like a Electricub.

I would take all of the electric motor gear box and use it for a paper weight.

You can run a BL motor, esc and 3s 220 battery. You would save weight, have more power and longer flights.

Thank You so much for the reply.
Unfortunately I am just getting into the world of electric flight, but already like the no muss no fuss about fuel and glo.
Not saying I`m giving up my Raptor 50 heli:D
.Ok , I have the rubber band wings and no ailerons, that I can live with. The more I look and clean on it the more I like it.

Question time.
What is the purpose of the gear box, I assume the same as a transmission on a car?
Am I going to have to use the gear box on the said motor you recomended ? And will it fit, never heard of this brand.Or will this motor be up for the task.? It looks like it offsets the prop height.
Nice price too.
I have a new (my first 2.4g futaba 6 EX radio) gonna take out the RX from another trainer and use in the cub.
Oh and thanks for the high lights and vidioes, do you deal with this out fit for parts and such ? Delivery times, no rush just excited to get started.

Oh, and if the gent still has the TX would it be worth it to put her back to stock as in how he flew it ?Or is the newer stuff just the way to go ?
Thanks again.
PS picked out the feild for maiden already.

RE: J-3 cub Identifly.

The gear box was to turn bigger props with less amps. In the stock form, I flew mine that way, I would get 5 minutes of powered flight MAX It was under powered and flew on the wing only. Not worth your time to try and fly it that way.

The motor I linked to will run direct drive, ( no gear box) with a 12X6 APC "E" prop. With the battery, motor, prop combo you will have 3 times the power and 3 times the flight time. You will have to make a mount for the brushless motor. It could be a simple wood box bolted to the firewall or stand offs.

When I order from Hobbypartz, I get it in 2 days. I am close to them though.

Another place to get about the same setup

I weighed the craft with 2 servos in stalled.
Came out to be
840 grams.
2960 ounces or
1.850 pounds.

I have a brush less E Flight 25 with a a Jeti6-16 nc/ ( the other words are worn off) ADVANCE 40 OPTD PLUSE I pulled from another plane

Can I use this for my application to start?
Or is this under powered ?
Trying to use what I have as to lack of cabbage at this time.
Thankyou for all the help.
Nitro was easey, .20 -90 put on a prop and fly.
Motors ,speed controllers, batt`s have a whole different world to me.

RE: J-3 cub Identifly.

The Eflite 25 weighs about 2 0unces more then the eflite, tacon 10 and would need to use a larger ESC and battery to get the most out of it.

With the tacon 10, 12X6 APC "E" prop, 3s 2200 lipo battery you should have 4 pounds of thrust. That should be more then enough to fly that around.

Yes my money garden has not grown for a while my self.

So your saying the my eflight 25 with the jetti 40 esc wouldn` be up for the task ?
I measured the tip of the motor in the mount to the table and have 8 inches.
12 inch prop would be in the dirt no ?

RE: J-3 cub Identifly.

Just picked up a new ESC, common sense RC 75 A OPTO 2-5 S Liithium
My LHS is worthless....I have another thread started about a trainer I have that weighs 36.35 ounces
I have 2 battires on hand.
Turnigey 4000 mah 3 cell 11.1 volt 20-30C
and a Lipo 1500mah 4S 14.8 volt
I have the J3 cub and another trainer that weighs36.35 ounces.
I think Im over powered for the cub and under powered for the trike..
Readey to go back to gas.
LHS deals with cars, and orders from Tower for parts and help.
AAAARggggg.
Getting frustrating.

RE: J-3 cub Identifly.

Well the eflite 25, with a 4s battery should fly a 4 pound (64 ounce) plane with ease. It should be putting out some where around 5.25 pounds of thrust. So it is over powered for the Cud and the small 2 pound plane.

I use this calc tool.

http://www.s4a.ch/eflight/motorcalc_e.htm

This little motor on a 3s battery turning a 10X6 prop will fly the 36 ounce plane

http://www.e-fliterc.com/Products/De...rodID=EFLM1505

Or this one

http://www.hobbypartz.com/75m21-opti...10-1020kv.html

I too was going way over kill on the motor battery size. I have learned that sometimes smaller lighter is more power.

The 3s 4000 is a little big for the Cub butt will work. Just more weight to fly around. You will get real long flights with it.

RE: J-3 cub Identifly.

Ok i`m starting to get it ,Thanks for the Cal.
Now, with the RX battery , I have a 6ex radio and rx,
I assume that the battery that pugs into the motor and esc will power the servos and RX ?
No need for a separate Rx Batt ?

blvdbuzzard 03-11-2013 04:14 PM

RE: J-3 cub Identifly.

That is correct. The ESC has a built in BEC (battery eliminator circuit ) It will power the servos and Rx. It plugs into the throttle channel.

RE: J-3 cub Identifly.

Gonna go to the LHS they are having a 50 % sale off there Common sense motors.
They have one that will drag a 24-44 ounce plane for 35 $
And a one that will drag a 31-58 ounce 42$
But I have to revisit your prices that you set me up with. Yours was mutch cheaper and who cant use more Batt`s
It`s just a PIA dealing with car guys(NO OFFENSE ) who dont know what prop pitch is.

blvdbuzzard 03-12-2013 03:22 PM

RE: J-3 cub Identifly.

Well I am a plane, helicopter, car, boat kind of guy.

Common sense makes GOOD motors.

You are looking for a motor in the range of 35mm dia by 42mm long Length can go to 48-50mm with a KV rating of 900-1100KV weight around 140-160 grams.

Higher KV smaller prop, lower KV larger prop.

That should put you in the ball park.

RE: J-3 cub Identifly.

Is this for the Cub 29 .60 ounces Common sense 24-44 ounce puller
Or the trike 36.35 ounces ? 31- 58 ounce puller.
Happy to hear its a good product.
I assume you mean Killi volts ?
Please bear with me.....Just hate spending money on non returnable parts.
Was gonna get both so I could get them both in the air.

blvdbuzzard 03-14-2013 06:19 PM

RE: J-3 cub Identifly.

The 24-44 one should fly the 36 ounce plane but would be to small for the Cub

The one that is rated for 31-58 ounce should fly the Cub.

Cub should come in about 40 ounces.

I looked for the motors but was not able to find any information about them. No motor goes to waste. You can always build a foam board plane and have a ton of fun.

RE: J-3 cub Identifly.

No motor goes to waste I like the way you think, were on the same page.
Just checked Eflight web page,
The brushless 25 I have will drag a 3 to 5.5 pound plane
On a 3 s or 4 S lipo. Still trying to figure that out. I have the 4S 1500 mah 14.8 V I think that will work but be under powered.
That is going in the Trike 3 pounder trainer I have.

I will PU the common sense motor for the cub. 24 to 44 ounce model puller They have. But was also thinking it might be better for the cub that it only weighs 29.60 ounces.

Just gonna have to figure out the prop sizes.

I know this is probabley 2and nature to you and Thank You for all the help.
Sorry for beating a dead horse.
Just wish my LHS was more knowledgeable about planes.

HAHAHAHAHAHA

Second nature, not even close. I have lost a lot of brain cells trying to under stand this stuff. Not easy but you will get the hang of it.

RE: J-3 cub Identifly.

Have the motor , esc and I think the right batt.
If you look a the first pic of the plane with the gear drive the prop is going to be mounted higher in the cowl. Should I just saw off the old motor mount ? And build another one ? or where can I find different motor mounts that work with the 4 screw backing plat that comes with my CSRC E8-S-10. Its alot shorter than the original table weight.

Ecstended and reinforced the fire wall. Felt good to modify something. Now it s personal.

RE: J-3 cub Identifly.

Back to the drawing board.
Mounted The CSRC motor E8 S 10
Used Jeti 30 plus 6-10 NC / 2-3 LIXX Esc.
Turnigy 4.0 4000 mah 20-30 C discharge 3 cell 11.1 volt batt.

Took it to LHS and the guy said your good to go.

Left the wing off and was taxing in the street for 5 -10 minutes.

I had high hopes that I would get to fly the next day.
Brought it in the house and wanted to see what kind of thrust she had, Held on and went WOT.
Very very impressed with the POWER I had , till the puff of smoke and a terrible sound came from the motor.
She tries to spin but wont engage.
Looks like I will be placing an order through your guys.

Very frustrating,

blvdbuzzard 04-06-2013 10:21 AM

RE: J-3 cub Identifly.

Was it the motor or ESC?

I think the 30 amp ESC was a bit low for this setup. What prop were you using?

Here is a link to an online calc tool for electric motors.

http://www.ecalc.ch/motorcalc.htm?ecalc&lang=en

May have had a little to much prop on it. Do you have a watt meter?

http://www.hobbypartz.com/aeo-p0-watt-meter.html

I have let the magic smoke out a few to many times, so I can relate to your feelings.
