Ultimate Bipe glow conversion
1 Attachment(s)
I had posted a while ago that I was going to convert a wattage ultimate biplane from electric to glow. well I finally got started on the swap. here's some pictures of the progress so far. I resest the firewall to try and off set the added weight of the glow engine that I'm using. as of now the fuse weighs 7oz with the motor mount installed.

progress report:
all electrical is in, tank is plumbed an mounted. total weight of airframe - engine is 1lb 4.5oz the donor engine is an old OS .25 FP, it weighed out at 10oz complete. I figure the total flying weight full of fuel will be just over 2lbs. should complement my little extra nicely. :D |

and here it is, the complete plane. as you can see sitting on the scale it weighs 1lb 15oz RTF.
I may make up a cowl for it but I haven't fully decided yet. what do you think? |
RE: Ultimate Bipe glow conversion

Make a cowl with the lost panty hose method. Search the tips & techniques folder. It's a lot of fun when I get to raid my wife's personals drawer! :D Oh yea.. The bipe looks like a hoot! My kind of project. Good luck! John |

I was thinking about trying the pantyhose method on this one, however, as luck would have it, when I went to the hobby store today I actually found the cowl to this plane. So, I picked up the cowl, here's some pics of it......fully complete! And I have to say, it definitely looks better with the cowl.

RE: Ultimate Bipe glow conversion
I have gone all the up to a 1/3 scale Space Walker,
but me and my flying buddy are making steady progress working all the way back down to .20's & 1/2A's... Funny how that works. I really like your bipe.... Let us know how it flies. Good Luck! John |

Flight Report:
the ultimate is a rocket!!! I'm pulling 14000 rpm with a MAS 8x4. she's diffidently fast, unlimited vertical. took a few clicks down elevator to stop the perma climb. it will knife edge at 1/2 throttle cleanly on low rates. I haven't tried the high rates yet but, it doesn't need a lot of throw. I took it up high and tumbled it a bit, have to be careful with the color scheme it's pretty easy to get disoriented. I put two flights on it before I packed up for the day. I'm glad I did the swap, it's a good addition to the hanger!!!:D |

Saweet.
It seems a little sweeter when it's something you have built/designed yourself, and nobody else has one quite like it... Good Stuff! John |

I especially love that engine sticking so high above the cowling. Just like a vintage Cox collectible. It even thumbs its carburetor up at the lekkies!

RE: Ultimate Bipe glow conversion
Gees I didn't think it really needed a cowl, but looking back at the picture without the cowl compared to the completed version with the cowl...holy smokes what a great looking bipe!!
Sounds like it flies as good as it looks, great conversion job and thanks for sharing the success story. |
RE: Ultimate Bipe glow conversion
I now have around 10 flights on the bipe. it has became a favorite at the field also. funny how adding a glow engine can change peoples opinions of a plane!:D

Sportrider,
I built one of those myself a few years back w/ a OS .15 turned 90 degrees and loved how it flew - was my favorite for a long time and loved to tumble - I guess I need to get it out again as it's been sitting for a while. Dale |
